Besides the obvious indicator of the stainless grill inserts what is the difference between a NON GT grill and a GT grill. Also are you able to put the inserts onto a NON GT grill?

Message William Link on Facebook, he has one of each on the shelf and would probably send you photos of them.

Can't move the stainless moldings from a GT grill to a Non GT grill. They are different.

The horizontal bars in the GT grill, where the 3 stainless bars attach, are a different shape. They are a smaller size overall, with tab sections that allow the bars to grab on to.

Also, those were a 71-72 only for the stainless. I might be incorrect on the 72 part, but the later GT grilles were painted black like the earlier ones with the argent/silver exposed on the three horizontals like the earlier stainless versions. The early stainless versions are molded slightly different on these three horizontal ribs to allow for the stainless to attach. - Matt

    Hi Will :
I got a ' roll ' of chrome plated plastic strip and secured it to my COMET grille in the strategic locations and you can't tell the difference from the Factory Pieces until you get up REAL CLOSE ... Just be careful cutting it to size .. if you make a mistake .. Cut Another One .. Drove my car for YEARS and NO ONE ever commented on my grille. If there are Purists out there that want to keep it all original .. then I guess MY approach would be out of line.. If you're looking for a little flash without a Lot of Trouble .. try my way .. It STICKS in place even after washings .. Try It ..You may

Agreed. 71-72 . Also, I have seen and removed the grille from early 4-door Comets, they too have been black with the stainless horizontal bars.
So it makes me wonder if there was a "GT" grille or a 71-72 grille and a 73-77 grille. The Mercury parts manual I have was a later print and thus only list the D34Y grille for the 71-77 Comet... I was hoping to see an earlier part number and surely there was one prior to the part being redesigned......

Just found out today that my buddy is picking up a 4 door 71 comet that has the GT grill in it. So there might not truly be a "GT" grill.

That definitely works! I picked up a perfect grill that I will eventually use on a future car. Might just use that method!

I have four Comet Grilles in great shape if anyone out there needs one . Lemmeno . I also have three Maverick
Grilles of different years .. Directional lights in a couple , none in the other. Selling all my COMET parts since I'am
driving my 70 Maverick now . My old Comet is in Pennsylvania now - Sold it seven months ago .. Still have a new
COMET front bumper Chromed and wrapped in the back office . Lemmeno how your grille turns out ... Maybe
post some pictures . Incidentally , they have a ' Wider ' roll of chrome plated plastic that fits well in the Wheel
Openings and cleans up those areas nicely .
