Is it hard to install a new ignition switch into the column? Ive only done one on the dash before (70 f100). Mine is getting stiff and not returning to where it should be when i crank it. Also where can i get a new one?
The locking type sw is easy to replace, drop column a couple inches and it will be in easy view, two nuts allow for replacement/adjustment. I dunno about non-locking but ones in dash I've replaced just plugged in. If switch is obsolete checking on ebay is one option, be sure to verify part number. I'd be VERY careful about spraying ANY cleaner into a 50 year old switch. If contacts have arced and carbonized grease inside, could very easily start a fire. Burned contacts were the reason Ford had numerous ign sw fires in late '80s. Triggered a class action lawsuit and recall on certain year models.
understand that but the rod sticking in the switch could be his problem. " getting stiff and not returning to where it should be when i crank it"
If that is the case... Disconnect the negative battery cable. On cars with a fixed steering column, remove the steering wheel trim pad and the steering wheel. Insert a stiff wire into the hole located in the lock cylinder housing. Place the gearshift lever in Reverse on standard shift cars and in Park on cars with automatic transmission, and turn the ignition key to the ON or RUN position. Depress wire and remove the lock cylinder and wire. Insert the new cylinder into the housing and turn to the OFF position. This will lock the cylinder into position. Reinstall the steering wheel and pad. Connect the negative battery cable.
The '70 uses a switch is a ONE year only part, also may be one of two possible switches, '71 is different. Only one I found on ebay was $339, also fit Torino and full size but supposedly not Mustang.
My ignition key lock was stuck, too, a couple years ago. 45 year old grease can get stiff. Took it apart, cleaned out the old grease and lubed with silicon spray. First time in years I could get it into the accessory position.
