I need some help. I’m building a 72 Maverick and bought a rebuilt engine. It’s been covered for about 5 years now and just recently put everything on it brand new. It turned on for the first time on Friday but found out that only 4 pistons are firing. I changed wires, spark plugs, coil, distributor, and modulator for new ones. I also checked compression and it’s all good. I still have that problem though. I don’t know if it’s happened to anyone else but I’m getting tired and I need help.

Welcome to the site from northeast Ohio!

First don't panic. Three additional questions to 71gold's, is the engine a V8 or a 6 cylinder? What is the story of the rebuilt engine? Who rebuilt it, a rebuild company or a private individual?

Just a thought, what firing order did you use to hook up spark plug wires ? More info needed

Original 302 use 15426378 firing order. HO 5.0, 351 and many aftermarket cams use 13726548

Update: It’s a 302 V8 we didn’t exactly find the problem. We just went to sleep woke up the next day started it and it was working fine. Thank you all for the help!!

Idle circuit in one side of carb plugged, fresh gas cleared blockage(admittedly not something one sees every day).

Regardless of what some think, there is always a explanation.

A bad dream possibly after a long day in garage?

First start or test drives have NEVER been perfect for me. Gotta tweak out them problems.

    I can relate to that.

I drove my Fairlane from just north of Charleston WV to home on a carb that only half was working, talk about a evil sumbish. I knew it had issues before I left OH but was sort of OK, idle would not set properly(don't need idle on I-77 or 64). Problem, it's a Chinese knock off Motorcraft 2300. Poor quality control, lost a staked in plug in main body, rendered left side idle circuit and booster inoperative. In other words it ran on four cylinders, climbed mountains at 40 mph in the truck lane. In Lewisburg WV I pulled carb and cut divider out of spacer, allowed all cylinders to get some gas. Still far from decent running, it did pull Afton Mtn at 80 MPH.

I was going to take a carb with me, BUT was stated it had a new one, figured it would not be necessary. Anyway after arriving home I tossed the Comet's orig 2bbl on it, came alive.
