7/8" was the optional heavy duty bar that became available in '75. All others are 3/4". You can have a larger bar custom-made. Otherwise, 7/8" is the largest you will find...

Well mine looks original....looks like it has never been changed. I knew the cars' original owner, and he is NOT the kind of guy that would have upgraded. I wonder if it was an option on some V8's, like the GT and the Grabber? This has me puzzled.

Not likely. Either it was added or you measured inaccurately.

Grabbers had no performance upgrades over a standard Maverick. They were only a trim package (eye candy)...

If you ordered the handling suspension package on a Comet GT in 1971 you got a 7/8" sway bar. I know because i ordered a black GT in January 1971. I had to wait 7 weeks to receive it. It Had The bigger sway bar and heavy duty shocks. No I dont have the paper work to verify this but I live where there is nothing but curves and I would out run a couple Maverick Grabbers in the curves.

You know, I completely overlooked the fact that your car is a Comet. Perhaps a bigger bar was available for the Comet GT. I'd bet almost anything that it was not an option for the Maverick until 1975. I have a Ford book that says so...

My '71 4-door Mav came with the suspension handling package from the factory and has the 7/8" bar.

I have seen sales data advertising heavy duty suspension.
The only thing that I have verified is the 4 leaf rear springs
vs. 3. (I think those numbers are correct)
Mine had 3 leaf springs and the smaller now removed sway bar.

I forgot to mention heavy duty or 4 leaf springs.

Hmmmm....after work today I'll check my leaf springs. Nevertheless I'm keeping my stock sway bar, just ordered new end link kit and brackets.
