Not sure what this is but it sounds horrible, like a high pitched pinging rattle like metal grating and rattling all at the same time. And it's moderate to very loud, like the decibal level of a squealing fanbelt but obviously not the same sound. The car runs fine generally but has some vacuum/fuel issues I'm working on. The noise doesn't happen when your gentle with the accelerator. It's definately not a ping from timing.

    The engine is a 302 5L from a 75 Mav. with a Motorcraft 2150 2V carb, dual exhaust.

So far I've asked a few people what it could be and most people just shake their head, but a few have thought it could be exhaust related. It happens when I floor it at lower speeds. I did have an exhaust assisted choke that was removed because it was causing problems. So there is a hole in the exhaust manifold where the metal assist tube went in. Do you think that could be the cause? I've tried new 'O' rings b/w the manifold pipe juncture. I hope it isn't anything serious. Have to move it a few hundred miles soon. Don't need any "surprises" on the open road. Any ideas anyone.

    I wonder......
I have heard cars make that sort of noise, especially under a hard throttle, turned out it was the coolant fan flexing and it was hitting the tranny coolant lines.

    just a thought!

    Good luck.

Is the drive shaft rubbing against something under hard acceleration?

I've heard the same noise from bad starters and once when a washer fell inside the engine.

That starter thing is interesting. I replaced the starter a while back. I'm not sure if that's where it started because the car's been parked for a few years and my memory is not so good. I was having a problem with the starter pinion/teeth getting caught in the fly wheel due to loose mounting bolts. They have need to be torqued every few years, even with lock nuts on, because they get loose. Kind of a p.i.t.a. Really hard to get to. So I've had a couple of occasions where the starter teeth have been all chewed up from hitting the flywheel wrong and needed replacement. Hey I wonder if there are fragments of the old teeth still in the flywheel housing??!! Thanks guys, I'll check that out as soon as I can. (Of course getting to the thing is a real pain cause you gotta pull off a crossmember, the steering mechanism, the exhaust pipe, again and again. It never ends! arrrgghh!) But it sounds like it could be the problem. Thanks again.:bananaman

Should I maybe be worried about damage to the flywheel now?

first thing i would check is make sure you dont have a broken engine mount.....it may be torking and causing the fan to rub against your shroud........best way to do this is to jack up your engine from the pan (make sure you put a board or something stiff there to keep the pan from collapsing) and jack it up just far enough to see if the mounts spread...

This may be a long shot, but could it be your PCV valve? My Maverick also has a 302 with dual exhaust and when I romp on it the PCV valve will rattle like crazy. It's annoying as hell but does not seem to be hurting anything. Just a thought.

Thanks for the ideas. I have even more problems on my hands now that I just got the car back from having it's leaf's redone and now it's tugging to one side. I have about 3 days to work on it before the big move unless I don't take time out to buy the wife a Christmas present. Hmmmmm...tough decision but those bucket seats are really hard on the back...

I'll post again when I get things figured out.

I know this thread is old, but in case it helps anyone else that views it in the future, I just wanted to say Jean Doll saved me a lot of worry by pointing out the PCV valve. I had some metallic rattling that sounded like extreme valve noise. It was just the PCV valve.
