Looking for information on possible way to test starter on vehicle? Tried going from battery to starter side of solenoid, nothing. I know I need to replace neutral safety switch, car only started in neutral since I’ve had it .
I bought new switch some years ago, I was told it was wrong one by a trans. shop doing work on it.
Would ns switch play a role going directly battery to starter. Plan on going to one of pgm units when I replace

I would think going from battery to starter side of solenoid should have nothing to do with neutral safety switch. and solenoid should be good if car starts in neutral...:scratchchin:

I think your correct on NSS switch would not have a bearing on starter engaging going to starter. Actually going to firewall side of solenoid is by-passing it.
I was incorrect on starting only in neutral position --- Should have said "Only in Park Position. Actually, think I may need starter and NS switch.

    Assumin original field core starter...

On solenoid, you can jump S post to battery cable post, or jump directly across solenoid from battery to starter post(they'll probably be major sparks using second method). Either bypasses ignition sw and neutral safety.

Thanks for diagrams and information. I used remote starter button on s terminal to battery, not even a grunt.
I used it on old solenoid and new one, same results. Connect 4 gauge wire, battery to starter side of solenoid, not even a spark. I didn’t have a solid connection, on the 4ga. wire, just held on the battery & solenoid contacts point. Think I should have seen some kind reaction?
Normally, I thought a starter give some signs of failure, nothing on this one. Know battery is up, keep it on maintenance device and reading 12.8v.
Considering a Powermaster 9103 pmg unit. Anyone had experience with such unit?

Connecting from battery to S terminal should at least produce a good "click" from solenoid. Without that, the starter will never see voltage.

Got a good click from old & new solenoids. Had car 14 years, don’t know how many years starter was in service before I got it, so good bet to replace it. I was lucky I had this issue starting in my garage, otherwise would have been on the hook second time in the past year. Late last fall e-fan controller bit the dust, put me on the hook.
Don’t like being on the hook!

Don't go be telling my starter that it got too old to start. It could be older than some of the members here on MMB. Here are its adoption papers I got June 6th, 1989...best $30 I have ever spent on car parts.

Till I installed the Stang 306 my Comet, had original starter.

    Fairlane has its original starter.

One on my Cobra was purchased in early '80s but not installed till around '87 or so. It's a little lazy cranking when hot, I have a new PMGR I hope to install this year.
