Went to my regular yard today and got the quarter glass and some 2 deluxe map lights for a whopping $15. Asked him about any other yards, and he told me of one up in tellico plains. I called my police friend who is works for tellico, picked him up and we found it. 20+ acres of cars dating all the way back to the 30's. I counted at least 20 mavericks and comets. There was one that had the v8 (engine and tranny removed) and still had the disc brakes and booster mounts and cross bars, bucket seats and good glass but it was stacked 3 up and i asked what he wanted for the whole car and he replied $700....OUCH He said 150 for the brake system and 100 for the front winshield. Buckets were the low back with the pull-up head rest. Oh this looked to be a 1974-75 comet 2 door automatic. Tomorrow I will be headed to another yard where i expect to hear deliverence music . Later Robert
Hi Robert What parts are you looking for? I havent been to Lowe's junk yard in a while but last time I was there they had 2 or 3. Is your 73 drivable? Chad
It was driven to my house when i got it.....But as we pulled in to the driveway had to put out a fire under the hood.....lost some of the wireing. I have been looking for all the clutch conversion stuff, even if i dont use it, just to keep it from being crushed. I have a 74 parts car with disc brakes. just have to get it from my dad's place to mine. My great nephew figured it was a junker and took a BB gun and shot out the front glass (which was flawless) . I am headed up to morgan county where a guy has a yard with several mavericks that he is about to crush. Was told there were a couple with bucket seats(which I want). What part of knoxville you in...I work off lovell road.. Robert
Come on man, can't you save em' from bein crushed? If you could get them for free/cheap I would take them off your hands for free/cheap and I am not remotely jokeing. My grandparents live in Murphy, NC off of hwy 64. Wouldn't be to bad of a drive.
I live in Maryville behind Foothills Mall. Let me know if you find a good small front bumper and rear gravel pan.
Junk yard Status report Well too late for most of them..he had already crushed 7 or 8 mavericks. there were still 3 or 4 left. I got the front glass...looked perfect and a bunch of chrome for 50 bucks. Going to go back up there next saturday if it doesnt rain to get more small parts. He did have a 1974 4 door that has a damn nice front bumper, only a few small rust pits. I got the winshield out of it. I hope it is the same size as the 2 door. As far as small bumpers go the best place it the yard in tellico. I can take anyone up there. I found no less than 20 mavericks and comets up there. Plus on the way back tonight I found a 1973 parked on a street no tags and a grabber hood.....nobody came to the door at the house but i left a note with my number:bananaman . Got to keep my fingers crossed. also found 2 more mavericks parked in yards in wartburg. Will keep the info coming. Robert
Crappy Saturday Well it rained all day saturday,,,,so no pullin parts. Going to call him after lunch to see if he will allow me to come today, but the weather is suppose to be great all this week so i will take off work on wednesday an got get all i can. Went to my dad's today, this is where I have the grabber hood stored. went to look at it and found several spots of rust through under the front lip . This next weekend I an going to go up on the mountain and take digital pictures of all the mavericks and comets I find. Although this guy is priced higher that anyother yard I have been to he has the most cars. Robert
Took the day off to get more parts. Here is what 75 bucks will get you shoppin up in the boonies. The rear glass from a 74 is in the back seat. Will be going back up there this coming saturday. He has 4 mavericks left and at least 2 of them have front disc brakes. also the big bumper you see is just a spare couldnt stand to see it crushed too nice. Got the mounts and the plastic peice too. The boxes are filed with sunvisors side lights, rear lights nuts and bolts and a complete 6cyl clutch pedal and Z-bar. I BEST START BUILDING A BIGGER GARAGE. Robert
Man! might need to take a short road trip up that way. Hey Jamie, I live outside of Charlotte. Maybe I ought to swing by, pick you up and us go grab some of those parts. I work for myself so I can sneak away during the week. I'd like to get a disc brake set-up plus all the v-8 swap stuff. clint
No V8's left They all got crushed several weeks ago, Didnt find out soon enough or i would have gotten more stuff. He said he crushed several v8 bucket 2 doors too . all that is left is 4 mavericks at this yard. 2- 2doors and 2 4 doors, all 6cyl. 2 have front disc and maybe a 3rd. the other had no wheels and is definatly drum. There is another yard I went to that have at least 20 + mavericks and comets but his prices are expensive. But if that is the only place to get it then you have to pay or go without, or look somewhere else. I am going to the other place in a couple of weeks to take pictures of all the mavericks and comets i cant find so that we all know what he has. The big thing is, is to ask around for info on the yards that are off the beaten path.
Cars to be crushed in about a week Me and RX7351W(chad) went up in the boonies yesterday and filled up my short bed truck with maverick parts. I got 2 full disc brake sets, entire dash for a non A/C car, 3 door glass several more front and rear glass trim 2 sets of 1/4 glass, all linkage for a power steering including the steering box, tons of brackets and bolts....the list goes on. All that cost me 200 bucks, Chad got dash parts, window regulators, 1 fender, 1 flat hood and much much more. This weekend is the rod run so I wont be hitting any yards but the weekend after that is to the big one with at least 20 mavericks and comets. Robert
Man! I have got to head up that way for some parts. I'm needed a disc brake set up plus some v-8 mounts. I just can't part with alot of money especially for the mounts. They look too easy to fab up to pay over $100 for them. Are you gonna sell these parts or are you putting them back? Good hunting clint
Most of the stuff I grabbed I wanted/needed for mine. I will have to go threw what I got again to see what I dont need. After pulling all the stuff I just left it in the car. I should have some extra tail lights but they arnt shiny. I needed a lens and figured I'd just grab them all since they were being crushed. I wished there were some small bumper cars there. Robert thanks again for taking me up there. Hopefully I wont have to work when you go the next time.
Maybe one day After i get mine on the road I might start letting some things go. At the moment I have tons of window trim and 3 full sets of 1/4 glass and soon to have 3 or 4 sets of the sport mirrors. But at the moment I dont know what i will need. Haven't started the restore yet but I hope to start by july. Have to finish up the Dune Buggy first. So much to do so little time. Dang job just cuts into the fun stuff. Robert
Spent a few hours pullin parts again went to the yard in sweetwater today, they open around lunch and close at 4pm on sunday. Collected another set of quarter glass from a 75 two door. That makes about 4 sets in the garage. started looking at the different cars in the 72-79 ford area and noticed a lot of them had parts that looked close to the maverick. the Mustang II and the granada have door pulls that are almost the same as the maverick. Except the granada has a screw through the top and has no chrome cover. But there isnt much left on these 2 to get. there are a couple of doors/ hinges I want to get and the rear glass is good in both. Was wanting to got to the bigger yard next weekend but since it is the weekend of the VW show in seiverville I will be there(Early 70's fiberglass dunebuggy is the other project) and i need to get some parts and look around. But i plan to get up there the next weekend if it doesnt rain. I will take a notebook and camera and take pictures of every maverick and comet I see and get the VIN off each one and post it. Robert
