If it's an 8.8 that hasn't been opened, it should have a tag on one of the rear cover bolts, usually the right side. on the bottom line it will have a single-digit number, a space, a two-digit number, a space, then "8.8". If it has an "L" between the single digit and the two digits it has a trac-loc. for example, it might say 3 55 8.8 for 3.55:1 gears in an 8.8 axle. or 3 L 73 8.8 for 3.73:1 gears with a trac-loc.

Just guessing now but 3.00:1 gears in an 8" rear axle.(first # is usually covered by the bolt itself) Top line tells where axle was assembled, I think if you go to mustangii.net they might have a link that explains that part of it.
