I have a two inch spacer that someone gave me years back and when I got my 650 doublepumper I had just for looksie stacked it all on top of my intake. What drawbacks are there if any are there to adding this thing to my setup; 302 (30 over),ballanced,292 competition cam(501 lift?),289 performer intake (dual plane),ported-polished cast heads, holly 650 dbbl pmpr. Advise?
The two inch spacer will give you more top end power but will sacrifice your bottom end as a result. Also I can't say if a two incher will fit under the hood or not but it would be close if it does. Personally I like my bottom end get-up and go so I took my spacer out a long time ago.
Thanks for the input. I read the same stuf on another post after I posted my question, I was thinking about this last night and when I loged on I just went to typing. Yea, I agree, I dont want to loose my low end power either, but dang, I think it looked better!(More chromie, aluminum stuff)
With the 292 cam, I doubt it will hurt your low end much. it should help your top end a good bit, but the intake is holding you back.
Should I change my secondary spring, if so what color do you suggest? I bought the stuf and built the engine about 10yrs ago, I thought I had picked a good intake, Did I miss something or did something better comeabout? I would like to maximize my options of corse. Gene
intake I think with all the stuff you have your intake would be the hold back Think about that some maybe change to a performer rpm or a weiand stealth...Jim
Yea those old 289 performers aren't the greatest. I would say with that cam it is holding you back. That cam should make best power upto 6800 rpm or in that general area and that intake craps out about 5500. Also make sure you valve springs are up to the task of winding it out that far.
When I read "I have a 2 inch" on the post. I thought he was going to tell us about something else.....I'll get my head out of the gutter now....
i use the 2inch phenolic 4 hole spacer and a 14 inch by 3 inch thick k&n filter edelbrock air cleaner.....everything fits great...
Hmmm, If my memorie serves me well, I had read about this combo(carb, cam, intake) in one of them Roding mag'z and simply followed the article. I also remember being impresive to the editor of the article and myself as it was compared with other applications at that time. Maybe it was a chevy guy playing with his first Ford or something , I don't know, but it's what I have now and I have spun the motor to 7000 before and decided that unless I have the $ to fix something I shouldn't do that, ALTHOUGH IT IS A RUSH TO PUNCH IT AND JUST KEEP GOING AND GOING AND!!....:evilsmile Oh... Anyway just thought I would ask about the spacer which should not be at the top of my list cause I need better diff gears anyway. Yea 1badmav, I have the best power when its in the 2200rps or so. I know its not very profesional but I like to take advantage of guys when we are rolling at about 20mph LOL, I'll give them the , and its ON! I am surprised that when I do this I tend to launch myself at least 2 car lengths in front, and even if they catch me, I'm there FIRST.(checkered flag smiley woulduv been nice here). I don't remember the specs if any but the heads are cast 302,ported and polished,Competition springs(has like double springs?),bronze valve guides, hardened valves, oversized exhaust valves(I remember the word "202" being used but not sure),hardened 3 angle seats,NEW keepers, factory rockers(for now and the past 10yrs). The Competition cam pumps up the Competition lifters, at this point I'm out of money and your tired of reading this so, I'm off to check the forum, later . Gene
Blu, I put in the 2" open and adjusted all the cables and linkages. It works just fine. The idle just lopes a little, but clean acceleration. I use one of those Edelbrock foam filters, triangular job with the wire mesh over it. My hood is gapped at the rear about 1" for a cowl effect. It seems like I have plenty of space under there.
Hey blu, picked up a .12 on my 1/8 ET, and 1.5 mph on my speed with that open spacer. Just thought you would like to know.
