I didn't want to post in Mavaholic's cam thread ... It was mentioned in that thread that Roller Cam's need a break-in period but not like Standard flat tappets ... I searched high and low but could find nothing about breaking in roller cams ... just about every document I found says no break-in required ... just make sure the oil system is primed ... I'll be cranking up my new roller in a couple of days .... any advice or knowledge on this would be appreciated ..... Thanks ...
All I have ever heard is to prelube the engine and fire it up. The cam profiles ride on a wheel and are not 'Rubbed' by a flat lifter so they do not need to polished/hardened by the break in procedure a flat cam needs. A roller cam will not be coated they usually are shiny with no dark coating right out of the box.
The man who built my engine told me that breaking in the engine is crucial and even advised me to build my heads after,so in my opinion I feel a break in may apply in any mechanical stage. What's wrong with being cautious? Besides, it could save time and money, two things I don't have enough of.
As far as I know flat tappet cam break-in is required to seat and harden the cam surface which is cast iron ... Roller-Cams are billet Steel so they are already hardened ...
