I'm just wondering, do any of you have mini-spools in and drive on the street? I was just wondering, what the sacrifice is in handling. My friend just put one in his 79 Ford pickup, and says he can't really tell a difference(Course he's runnin' about 10+ inches of lift and 42 inch swampers:rolleyes: , so how could you tell:p ) I was just wondering if it is worth it to install one and still drive on the street. Comments, guys and gals, Comments!
    Preston:D

Bad idea. Can cause axels to break, excessive tire wear, and loss of vehicle control. You need a limited slip differential (Traction-Lok).

Definitely....De....De.... Definitely a bad ideal. Try taking a 90* turn at about 20 -25 mph. If your axles do not snap, the rear of the car will bounce like a basketball. Spools are for racing. Limited slip is the only way to go.

not to mention trying to negotiate a turn on wet pavement a little faster than anticipated...that's a guaranteed trip to the hospital, and the mav's ticket to the salvage yard. Dont do it.

I do have a spool in my Maverick, but its only on the street about 5 percent of the time. When I do drive it on the street you have to remember about turning and anything wet....it doesnt come out in the rain anyways. Dailt street driven.....no way.

    I've never had a problem....

I have a full spool in mine, I think for an ocassional trip out on the street it's not a problem. I ran a spool on stock axles for a couple of years and never had any problems. Definitely don't want to be going around sharp curves in the rain and it will wear your tires faster!!!

don't do it. it's definitely not safe unless you only take it out once in a while on a sunny day. even then you stand a chance of breaking something.

I ran a mini spool in my car for 5 years with lots of street cruising on the main drag with stock 28 spline axles and never had any problems.

    Well....

It sounds as though there are more cons than pros. So I guess I'll just stick to what I have. STOCK Is there any car that came stock with a posi-trac or limited slip diff. , that will bolt under a 1972 maverick? Just curious. Found out that junk-yard cruising is fun!

I just bought a Ford Trac lock for my Bronco, 8.8 31 spline, from Summit. It was only $260. I'm sure they carry them for the 8".

I doubt they carry them for the "8" (although I don't actually know). I know they carry them for the 9...

currie enterprises sells 8" locker rear ends. my catalog is out in my other garage, but i'm sure they have a web site. any car with an 8" that has traction lok will fit. just change out the 3rd member. i've got a 78 mustang II cobra that has one. i'm not sure about others. i've found them at auto swap meets.:)

I'm not suggesting it's safe, but I ran an Auburn in my '90 Mustang (~300 h.p.) for years with no problems.
