    What a night ...

First new dizzy won't go in ... even tried on the old engine on the stand ... no good. No matter what it won't drop down .... Call Pertronix tech support. They say to check the oil seal O-ring .. some of them are too big .... Swap the O-ring with a factory one and boom ... drops in! ... Cool ...

Run the wires 5.0 style ... not 302 ... I remember that ... Try to start it ... won't start ... start doing normal Pertronix troubleshooting ... ain't that ... If I pour gas in the carb it runs ... then stalls. Pour gas in ... it runs then stalls. Pump it, pump it ... runs, backfires, stalls, smokes ... crap! This is the exact same thing it did with the other engine! Holy crap ... Is the carburetor the problem? No way ... I just spent $1800 swapping and engine and it was a bad carb?

It's driving me nuts so I go down to autozone and buy a new 1406 Edelbrock. Install it ... low and behold ... the engine is running! Still smoking like a pig though ... perhaps factory break-in lube? I did put some cam lube on the dizzy gear so maybe that is it ...

Let it run for a while .... smoke is finally clearing up .... but it runs ragged when I give it throttle ... hmmm .. the car was at like 1200 RPM and only running 6 degrees BTDC ... move the dizzy to about 20 degrees BTDC and give it some throttle while watching with the timing light. Hits about 30 or so degrees BTDC ... thats good I guess - seems the vacuum advance is working. But ... starts running real ragged again .. more smoke out the back .... Crap ....

Then I notice my clear Fram fuel filter is empty ... fuel is just barely trickling out the main line into it .... normaly that thing is full all the time ... Bad fuel pump ... blocked line ... crap ... I give up for tonight ....

I'm pretty bummed at the thought that I just swapped an engine because of either a bad carb, fuel pump, fuel filter or clogged line ... Oh well ... on the bright side I have a roller cam motor ...

I just went and started it up again ... hard starting and smoking .... and dying ... Very similar to the previous engine .... can't be a coincidence that is for sure!

The only thing left in common is the fuel pump, fuel lines and gas.

I drained some of the gas out ... looks OK ... I'm gonna put it in my lawn mower tomorrow and see what happens.

The original problem was like this:

Driving to Commerce to Fun Ford Weekend. I'm about 1/4 tank so I decided to fill up. I've already driving 25 miles and car is running fine. I fill up the tank. 2 miles down the road from the gas station car starts running like crap .... I see it starting to smoke ... I can't keep it running and it finally stalls. I get towed up because it won't stay running. I figure I blew a head gasket .....

Thats leads me to today with a brand new engine with very similar issues .... What are the chances bad gas could hose the car up this bad? I guess I need to run it out of a jug of fresh gas and see what happens ....

:hmmm: I've always been under the impression that you could run a gas engine on diesel as long as the engine was at operating temperature, won't run well if at all when it's cold though. This is something I've never tried though, just heard about many yars ago.

Get a gallon can of fresh gas and run a hose from your pump down into it. That will eliminate most of the fuel system.

If you filled up with diesel it might run a while but will smoke like crazy, foul plugs, spit sputter and do all kinds of crazy stuff. Lets see, 1/4 tank gas plus 3/4 tank diesel, yep that would be a pretty strong mixture. Ex Brother in law did that years ago on a Pontiac Sunbird, we ended up taking the tank off and draining it before we ever got it to run right again. Diesel is a light oil, a little in gas won't hurt but a 3/4 diesel to 1/4 gas ratio won't burn in a gas engine----would make a diesel engine run like stink for a little while.......untill it blew the heads off !

    Do what Dennis suggested.
Diesel fuel has more of a petroleum smell to it and usually a green tint to it.

Your going to run that in you new mower? If I remember correctly the car, the mower happened together to begin with.:D Just kidding!

Next time you go to the gas pump, pick up a diesel pump nozzle and sniff it,
then sniff the gas nozzle. Diesel is much heavier and oily smelling. That
    should help.
I would guess that you have stirred up some junk in the tank with possibly
gas, doubt you put diesel in it.

Your line may have a blockage. Did you replace your rubber sections of the
steel line back to the tank? Did you replace the steel line? I have seen a
blockage in a steel line and the pump will suck air through a dryrotted rubber
    section.
I think it's probably going to be fuel related. The trash may have gotten past
the fuel filter and in the carb.

:biglaugh: Can you imagine what the workers/customers at the gas station would think about us Maverick people if you make Dan go out there sniffing fuels. Sorry I just imagined seeing someone run around a gas station sniffing gas and diesel fuel nozzels.

Good luck in resolving the issue.

Dan, Do it discreetly. Once you capture the aroma of diesel
in your nasal passages, you will always remember it.
IF you find that you have diesel in your tank, I would drain
it out. I doubt you do.

Dan get rid of that clear Fram fuel filter and get an old fashon tin one. I've had several of the clear filters go bad on me, but never a tin one. At least until you get the car running right. JMHO Russ
