I always loved a sleeper. I have intentions of having one someday. There's no finer feeling than having someone look at your plain jane ride and watching their jaws hit the ground when you leave them standing in a cloud of dust.:D

As far as people being suprised at getting beat by a four door, I have a 77 Buick park ave (Electra), that is 2 inches away from being as long as a suburban. You look at this thing and expect to see a grandma riding the brakes all the way down the street. The nice little 403 under the hood makes sure those ricers are looking at granny's fanny end. I will never forget the look on this one guys face when he was racing me, used NOS and still lost to my $500 dollar hoopie. If that wasn't enough, the look on his girlfriends face was.

    my 2 cents

    I'd go with a 347 stroker/5spd(or AOD)with a procharger blo-thru setup,and mustang II front end,9"rear with some really nasty gears!

Well, since you asked, 4-doors are ugly. There is nothing sporty about them at all, and they are more for family-car use.

With that said, if you are someone who wants to build a "sleeper", nothing bruises an ego more than getting blown away by an old plain-Jane 4-door.

Damm, I just realized this thread is over 10 years-old!

A lot of it has to do with the time and era. I grew up in the fifties and sixties and in those days 4-doors were considered only good as family cars and taxi cabs. Most of them have lots of extra posts and windows and a longer wheelbase that messes up the aesthetics. (This is why the famous Gapp and Roush Pro Stock Maverick was successful because NHRA allowed a favorable weight break due to the longer wheelbase of the 4-door.)

By the seventies most 4-door cars were considered as nothing more than parts cars for restoring the 2-door versions.

And this is where I still come from today. (It's hard for us old guys to break our habits!)

Even though nowadays there are many high performance 4-doors on the market and there really is nothing wrong with one, I still think of them as family cars and parts cars and wouldn't want one.

Not saying there's anything wrong with one for you, they just don't work for me.
