I recently received an invitation to participate in a special display of emergency vehicles at the Hagley Museum and Library car show September 18 in Wilmington, Delaware. They put on a show every year that hosts at least 500 vehicles and they have a special display of something at each show. One year, it was T-Birds, woodys, etc. They display noteworthy vehicles of all types in the special display forum. I figured the show was of some importance to receive an invitation and where it was from, so I returned the form with a picture. Apparently, our outgoing pres of the Honor Guard nominated my car as he is a member of the Brandywine chapter of the AACA which is intimately involved in the show. Later, I received a reply that the PoliceMav was accepted to be in the special display. I thought that this was really cool, but little did I know how much. Turns out the original form I received was only an invitation to apply to participate, not an acceptance. My feelings of cool turned to complete shock. Read on..... We just came back from Lewes, Delaware where we take the camper most every year. It's our 'second home'. of sorts, but that's another story for the "Off Topic" section. I have friends there now through the copcar organization so we met up for dinner. My one friend, Bob Herrington, has been in classic cars and copcars for a long time and is quite the restorer. His cars are a story in itself and he has been honored even by the Governor of Delaware for his '67 Cadillac past governor's car that is a number #1 restore. When I told him about the Hagley invitation, he raised his eyebrows and proceeded to tell me, "Oh, you got sent the orange paper! (the form was printed on orange paper)", meaning that it is quite an honor in classic car circles to be chosen for a Hagley show special forum. They only choose a few cars from all that are sent applications and these are considered the best and/or most unusual of the best. At first, I thought he was pulling my leg. He assured me that he was serious. The Hagley Museum is on the site of the DuPont mansion right in Wilmington. Yes, the DuPonts of the chemical fortune, etc. It's supposed to be quite the layout with galleries and museums of several different kinds as well as a library of rare artifacts. The car show is held on the grounds. I had never heard of the show and Bob told me that show goers like us usually won't hear about it. It's not quite Pebble Beach, but way up there and they never publicize it in magazines or media. It's all invitation or who you know. It's quite likely that this is going to be the first Maverick at Hagley. Another feather in our caps. I'd like to dedicate this honor I have received to all of you. When one of us receives accolades, we all do by extention.
Wes, that is awesome! We don't deserve your glory, it was your dream and I'm glad your share it with us. Good luck Wes.
thats cool! btw whats law on driving around a car at looks like a police car? out of service sign? covered lights? oh yeah and take some pictures!
Way to go, Wes! That has got to be an incredible honor to know your Police Mav was chosen to appear at such a prestigious event. I for one am extremely proud of you. Be sure to take a ton of pictures for us to drool over.
Thats awesome! I'll bet your extreamly proud. I to wonder what the laws are on the lights and stuff. Me and Comet Princess was discussing that on AIM one night a while back. In the late 80's - early 90's my Mav was used as a Fire Dept. car with red lights and siren. The old siren was still on it when I got it and it shorted out and went off in the middle of the night the first night we had the car. I thought it was a car alarm at the time.
wtg wes. i remember when i was at the dupont museum. yeah right. the closest i came was buying a can of dupont wax at autozone. keep going. you're on quite a roll now.
Congrats Wes!! You Are The Right Man For The Job And Your Car Is Sure To Be A Hit At The Show, I'm Proud To Have Found This Site And To Have Met Some Of The Nicest People In The Hobby At The 05 Roundup.
Thanks all. To answer the question on lights, yes, they need to be covered while operating the car on public roads. I have magnets that say "HISTORIC RMP - NOT IN SERVICE" that I place over the door shields also. Now, while using the car in the area of an event, we uncover everything. Oh yeah, RMP stands for "Radio Motor Patrol".
