Sometimes finding really nice taili-light housings can be difficult. If the car has any rust at all allowing moisture and debris into the trunk...the taili-light housings will be rusty and nasty looking on the side that faces into the trunk. Over the years....I have seen many cars that had the factory trunk speckle paint applied AFTER the car was fully assembled. This means the tail-light housings, side markers, and all wiring will have speckle paint sprayed all over it as well as the trunk. I have been quick to discard these parts as they had been "painted" and don't look good in my opinion. I decided to take a set of them and see what I could do with them. In this before shot....one can see that the rest of the housing looks really presentable. The only "bad" part is where it was painted. If one thinks about it....this is the only part that was painted...so it is the only part that was subject to the elements if it had been left "bare". In a way....it was sealed shut at the factory!!!
I bought a spray can of aircraft paint striper at an auto body suppy store. Simply sprayed the back of the housing to let it soak. After 10 or 15 minutes....I scraped off the paint. I then sprayed the tail-light housing again and used steel wool to give it a final cleaning. A little soap and water and this is what you have....a really nice tail-light housing worthy of a show vehicle.
got the same syuff to take five coats of paint off my tail lights .....that stuff is freakin awsome !
Oh yeah!!! Pictures coming soon. I have lit a fire that burned out about 3 years ago. Finding parts you removed 5 years ago is fun. Easier to raid the "for sale" parts stash than it is to dig and find where I put the other parts.
I did the same with the plastic comet taillight housings. Afterwards I used grey primer to simulate the original gray plastic. They were swirled and faded for some reason-perhaps from age. Funny that the Mavericks/Pintos were metal and Comets/Montegos were plastic. Seth
wow if i go to a show and they look in my trunk to see how clean my tail-light housing are to determine if my car should win or not.... i don't ever want to attend that show again
