I'm going to have to replace the flex plate and maybe the starter AGAIN on my combination. I have a 1990 Mustang 5.0 Block, C4 Tranny (unsure of year/app), 157 tooth Flex Plate for a 1970 Mustang 6 cyl application (comes already zero balanced), and a block plate between the block and tranny. The starter I'm using is the Mini-High Torque Starter found on the '91-'94 AOD Mustangs. This will be the third flex plate. The first time, the bolt-hole in the bell-housing that the top of the starter bolts to cracked, allowing the starter to deflect away from the flex plate, subsequently destroying the FP. After replacing the FP, it's started again after, say 50 cranks (it never really sounded like it was a perfect match from the start). There is very little clearance between the starter and the headers. I don't think a full size starter would fit my particular application (1970 w/ 1-3/4" Hedman Super Comps). Which starter are you guys with a 5.0 block and 157 toothed C4's using? Are you using a block plate? Thanks, Rick
My cousin got a good deal (free!) on an Izuzu starter with gear reduction... custom made by a starter shop. We had gear problems, the guy put too small a gear on it, never engaged. Size wise, it was as close to perfect as you could get with long tube headers.
I don't understand, you are using a 6 cylinder zero balance flexplate with a late model 5.0 engine? Did you get the flex plate balanced to 50 ounces imbalance? clint
I am using a 83 crown vic motor 302 and my c4 from my 250ci and i used the starter that was on my car, then when my headers destroyed my first one, I bought one for the crown vic..... the 83 came with a c4 so it worked out, the big ass starter that I use was a bugger to get in there past the headers ...... if I ever have to buy another one, I know there is a topic around here about a mini starter out of a mustang that worked and weighs alot less then stock one
That's the one I'm using (if you're talking about the '91-'94 Mustangs) Clint. My motor is internally (neutral) balanced. The 6 cyl flex plate has 157 tooth and 'supposed' to work with the '91-'94 Mustang Starters. I think I might try removing the blockplate and giving that a try. Otherwise, I need to go to an SFI bell housing anyway. I'll have a better understanding of what's going on once I can see the pattern the starter is leaving on the flex plate. I'm beginning to get a little perterbed at this thing.
Gotcha Rick, guess that anit no stock 5.0 then. lol My dad's 93 F150 with the 5.0 has a small gear reductuction type starter on it. Maybe that's the one people need to look at. I had to replace it for him once and it was'nt cheap. Seemed like it was a good bit over $100 clint
