I am about to get a new(rebuilt) transmission and I have the option of getting a c4 or a small block c6. the guy that we are getting it from said that you may have to do some body work to get a small block c6 to fit. I was wonder if that was true or not. he said that the tailhousing is bigger. any info would be appreciated.
i think any c-6 will need some mods. question is why would you want a c-6. the c-4 is a good tranny and is stock for the maverick so no mods would be needed.
C6 will require a lot more than body mods! Floor pan mods Shortened driveshaft Custom made crossmember Different torque converter Possible different flywheel, I don't remember Possible different yoke and forward U-joint. Then: C6 is heavy C6 takes about twice as much HP to spin than C4 (not exaggerating) All this leads to less RWHP, RWTQ, and MPG. Sorry I don't remember exact details. It's been almost 20 years since I have done this exact swap... well almost exact. I did it in a 71 Torino. That car was easier because it was built to use a C6 as an option. So the crossmember was adjustable between C4,C6, and FMX. As well as the tranny tunnel could accomodate the larger tranny. Mavs don't have any such luxuries. Dave
No to the c6 I'll add one more thing against the C6. A friend of mine has 351 c with a c4 and he just had to have a c6... his motor is built and kept breaking that c6. Now he rolls with a 5 speed from summit... no problems. I might add that the c6 was also from some place like summit(new). It's only one case but I think a c4 will out last a c6 behind almost any motor.
