What gears do you want? If you look around, you'll find quite a few sets for the 8". 2.79 is common, as is 3.00, 3.55, 3.42 (I think..somewhere in there), 3.25, 3.89 (or was it 3.90) 4.11, 4.62, and I believe I saw a 5.14 once upon a time too.

8.8=not easy to work on while the rear is in the car. Swapping gears is a PITA, easiest to take the whole thing out and do it on a stand or sawhorses. With the 8" or 9" ya just take the chunk out, and swap in another one...takes what, 30 minutes?

Seriously, most of the 8.8's are wider than the factory 8". The 8.8s are all C-clip axles and if you put slicks on it and run at an NHRA track, they'll want you to put c-clip eliminators on it ($$$$).

About the only thing desireable about an 8.8 is you can get one for about $20 at any junkyard.....unless it's out of a Mustang, then they charge an arm and a leg and then some.

If you take an 8.8, narrow it, weld on spring perches, add an aftermarket kit with axles and c-clip eliminators and then get some cheap gears they are a little cheaper than a similarly setup 9". They are lighter and more efficient than a 9" and have proven to be reliable on many fast mustangs.

The best is to find a stock 9" that will fit directly into a Maverick and then get some gears for that, but they are getting hard to find nowadays. I'm still trying to decide which one to go with.

    Might be a dumb question?

    Is a 8.8 and a 8 3/4 rear the same thing?

Just thought I would ask.
