Trying to get my 72 Comet GT running. Car doesn't start. Thought it was a bad battery. Replaced the battery. Still doesn't work. Lights come on, but engine doesn't turn over, no noise, nothing. So It could be the soleniod, right? I remember starting my car with a screw driver years ago to test the soleniod, but I have forgotten which termals to jump. There are four termials. A big one closest to the batter. Then two smaller ones, and then a bigger one. Don't want to jump the wrong ones because it could be dangerous, right? Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
You jump the first big one that comes directly from the battery and the first small one. You won't hurt anything by jumping the wrong 2. If the car has been sitting for a long time, make sure all your wires are getting a good connection. My car had been sitting for 9 years when I got it and it wouldn't turn by the key either. After pulling all the wires to the solenoid loose and cleaning them with some sand paper, it works fine.
Jamie is right Make sure that you have clean contacts. Check all the fluids as well. With the battery cables unplugged and some or all of the spark plugs out, you may want to try and spin it over by hand. Some people even recommend shooting a small amount of oil in the cylinders before attempting to start it if is has sat for a long while or in a harsh, extremely dry or wet climate. Post some pics or e-mail me about getting it into the registry. redcometgt@aol.com Seth
If the car acts like it wants to start than check to see if you have a spark coming from the coil. Pull the wire from the distribtor and have someone start the car. Hold the end about 1/2 inch from a metal surface. You should see a strong spark coming out. Make sure you hold the coil wire with a insulated pair of pliers.
