and look what i found in it! :49:

if your blind like me this is what it says:

    Main header says this:

    FORD MAVERICK (1969-73)

Yet another car that seemed fine when it was new, but which turned out to be a badly built disaster on wheels, the Ford Maverick lost its reputation to metal fatigue. There were four-door and two door models, as well as a Mercury version called the Comet. Most were finished in lurid colors with vinyl roofs, and what they all had in common was that they were built on a platform which was heavily prone to rusting.

Nor was their case helped by gutless and fragile in-line six engines. But the cars were cheap and therefore popular, especially during the 1970’s fuel cries. While the perilous handling and poor performance were accepted by buyers in the first place, the rot that manifested itself later most certainly wasn’t…

    Specifications box says this:

    TOP SPEED: 162km/h (100 mph)
    0-96KM/H (0-60MPH): 15.4 secs
    ENGINE TYPE: in-line six
    DISPLACEMENT: 2784cc (170ci)
    WEIGHT: 1084kg (2411lb)
    MILEAGE: 12.8/100km (22mpg)

The small quote says this, you gotta love this one!!! :49: :

Left: The Maverick had many problems, the biggest being that , whichever angle you viewed it from, it was desperately ugly.

    Other pages states these highlights:

    - It was spacious and comfortable but the maverick offered few creature comforts. The cabin was normally trimmed in cheap-looking black vinyl, which got unbearably hot during summer months.

    - Not even the styling could save the Maverick. It wasn’t especially offensive, but it was considered rather bland, while two-door version had far too much metal in the rear quarter panel – a problem, given how rust-pone the metal was.

    - Ford dropped a blooper with the original maverick, The floor pan had so many dirt and water traps that is was unenviable rust would eventually take hold, particularly as the cars left the factory with hardly any under seal.

    - The car’s soft ride and cart-sprung suspension meant handling wasn’t the Mavericks forte, while the steering was vague, especially when the front bushes and gaiters started to wear out, causing the mechanism to seize.

can you say ouch! i think some things are wrong but i'd say most are true :p but i think i'm gonna boycott Barnes & Noble Book stores now since its a Barnes & Noble pubication.

What a load of absolute crap. The Maverick made Ford a lot of $$$, and my 33 year-old Maverick is still running and has minimal rust for a car of that age. Sorry but the world's worst cars don't last more than a third of that amount of time. Look at all of the various cars from the '70s and show me which ones are still on the road today...

I certainly hope the 80's Mercury Lynx and Ford Escort made it in there. Talk about scrap metal on wheels...

But you bought the book. :tsk: :D
Funny thing is, this is the same plateform the Mustang, Falcon, and almost every mid size and compact car made in the 60's and 70's, was built on. Why blame the Maverick for it. As far as ugly, thats strictly a personal observation. I dont know why they are able to publish that as fact. I'm glad no self respecting Maverick owner would buy that book!!! :biglaugh:

They don't call mustangs "Rustangs" for no reason either;)

It seems to me all 70's cars rust pretty bad. Goodson wouldn't be in business otherwise.:D

That book taught me something new, though. I didn't realize the Mavericks were made from 1969 to 1973. Apparently they really did their homework on the subject. :16suspect

What are bushes and gaiters? Sounds like it was written by an Englishman that never drove one. Also the picture next to his comment about the way it looks,is a concept version (which I also think looks like crap).I think there are alot of cars that deserve to be in there, but the Maverick isn't one of them.Selling for $1995.00,I think it was a good car at the right time.Whenever people see our cars, they always have fond memories attached to owning or driving one.I've never had anyone tell me that it was the worst car they ever owned.
Every car has its faults, some more than others. But I can think of quite a few that would make that list before the Maverick.

I love how these publishing companys try to insult peoples intellegence with half correct information. Nearly every car maufactured in the 1970's was a born rust bucket. I have yet to see a single car from that era that did not have major rust issues somewhere. The Mavericks and Comets were definitely not alone in that department, so it seems rather unfair to single them out that way. The part about them being " desperately ugly " is clearly in the eye of the beholder. Was the writer trying to imply that from 1974 up to 1977 the Mavericks got better looking? The only major cosmetic change to the car was the addition of the big bumpers, and even most Maverick and Comet owners agree that the big bumpers were the ugliest part of the car. I can't say anything there because both of our Mavericks have big bumpers. Most people I have talked to think the Mavericks have nice lines to them that gives it a sporty look. None of them ever thought of them as ugly. If you were to park a Maverick next to an AMC Pacer , who do you think would win that beauty contest? The fact is, most people would most likely take the information in that book with a grain of salt. Nothing written in that book is going to change the current popularity of our cars. If anything, it could prove to make our cars even more popular.

the only thing at all i would agree with is the flunky suspension, all mavericks i had even with rebuilt suspension were noisy and gave road rumble........BUT YOU GOTTA LOVE A MAVERICK FOR WHAT IT IS....I LOVE MY GRABBER

They missed so many things about how much our cars suck lol. Seriously they should have done their homework before writing a book like that. That's not even a real maverick, it was a prototype. Did they ask people if they thought the car was ugly or only go by their own opinion? Because I hear from people everyday how nice my 4 door big bumper comet is. I know all of us get comments on how cool our cars look.

A good point was brought up; I cannot count how many times someone has told me that they once had a Maverick (or Comet), and not once has anyone ever said that it was the worst car they ever owned.

As for the "perilous handling", mine handles pretty damm good. What car from the late '60s/early '70s handled well with skinny bias-ply tires?

As I've stated before, Mavericks are very attractive-looking until a bunch of gawdy extra trim is added. Excellent body lines. That writer is full of krap...
