    Missing my old '70 Maverick
So there I was, sitting back in my lawn chair, sippin' on a Texas Tall Boy Kool-Aid, admiring my Maverick I'd just rolled out of the garage (for the first time in 6 months). 'Thinking how nice it's gonna be to finally install the engine/tranny and run her down the track.

This is exactly how the Mav looked that day.

Lot's of Mustangs, LS1's etc, go by and rev their engines - like I'm gonna jump in my car and take out after them! HA!

A few people who are walking/jogging stop by and ask me about my Camaro :)D) and I answer all their ignorant questions (not demeaning them - they simply haven't been exposed to "race cars", especially a 1970 Ford Maverick Grabber!)

One particluar guy drives buy in a 1 Ton Cheby with "Smokin' Joe's BBQ" on the door and pulling a huge 'smokin' BBQ pit behind him.

He gets out, introduces himself, and begins asking a hundred questions about how fast the car's gonna be (you know the type). No biggy.

I'm thirsty for another Kool-Aid and asks him if he'd like one. "Sure!" as he pulls up another lawn chair obviously intending on staying a few minutes more.

He finally gets around to asking me how much a good paint job would cost. 'Seemed VERY interested in that aspect of the future of the car.

I tell him that a good paint job, one where they take all the trim off, do a good walnut blasting, ding straightening etc would cost between 2 and 3 thousand dollars (not that I was going to pay that much!).

    (End of novel coming soon)

He asks me who is sponsoring me. I kinda chuckle and said "Well, I'm not really commited to anyone right now." :D

His quick reply, "Would you take a down payment of $500.00 to let me reserve the doors of your car for my logo? I'll pay for the paint job".

You guessed it - I shat my pants.

Anyway, we make a gentlemen's agreement/handshake deal and he writes me a check right then and there for $500.00.

I'm at his bank before the sun comes up the the next day with check in hand and quickly cash that sumbitch before any of his other checks come through (if he's going around town giving money away - there might not be any left in his account by the time they get to mine!) Cha-Ching! :D

Anyway, it appears I'll be sporting the logo of "Smokin' Joe's BBQ" on the side of the Maverick when/if it ever cranks.

He also asked that I agree to allow him to park my car at one of his restaraunts one Saturday or Sunday per month.

He adds that he has the car hauler/BBQ pit to haul it around to different tracks. That part remains to be seen, but ya never know - I didn't fathom him writing me a check for $500.00 that day either!

I'm not braggin' or anything - cause NOTHING like this EVER happens to me!

'Just had to share my good fortune!

edit: After reading a few replies, I realized I didn't state clearly that the $500 was only a deposit to reserve the exclusive right to put his logo on it. He will be paying the entire $2500.00 paint job.

Hell, I'll tattoo his logo on my FOREHEAD for the right amount of money!

BTW, the car is "strip only", so it's not like I'm "selling out" my street car to anyone - besides, a laid-off guy will do what a laid-off guy has to do.

Well, how cool is that, that you'd be building a race car and he's lookin' for something to slap his logo on! Mighty cool!!!

I can only dream of something like that happening to me. Youd better spend every penny of that on the mav:)

    Rick!

That is the coolest thing I've ever heard.
If I had a garage, I'd shove my Maverick out in front of it right now.
    hehehe
    Awesome Rick, Congrats!

Thats pretty good when they come to you. Its kinda a shame to cover up such a pretty car with logo's and stickers though.

Sorry Rick, I have to agree 100 and 10% with Dennis, that Maverick is just to sweet to do that to. Now with that said, it is hard to turn down 500.00 washington's when someone puts them in your hand.

As always this is just my 2 cents.

    One word.... MAGNETS.....

Have used them many times and they dont come off down the track. Once done racing or no more sponser money from him, off the come. Most lettering place can get the magnet sheets and then you can cut them right around the logo. Heck I have flames that are magnets......lol

By the way....the car looks great.

I loved that story----That is probably some of the best news ever, especially being laid off. Nothing wrong at all with having sponsers help with the strip duty!!
