I don't know how many of you are familiar with facebook, but there are groups you can join and such. One of these groups was the sportscar club. I decided to join feeling as though my 302 Comet was cool enough to hang with a couple of Miata's and other such riffraff. They denied me entrance into the group and refused to post my car saying it was not a sports car. I was very disappointed and would just like to hear some fellow enthusiasts opinion. My opinion is that I will walk all over his little miata's ass with my 302, but that's just my opinion. LOL.

in a straight line maybe, come corner wise, unless you have some serious suspension work, miata will go zooom :biglaugh: but in a straight line no contest

My opinion: Mavericks/Comets are not sports cars.

I was brought up that a "sports car" was a 2 seater. (Vette, AC Cobra, maybe even AMX)
Next was a "pony car", or 4+ seat, 2 door, usually hard top. (Javelin, Mustang, Camaro, Barracuda)
Then was the "muscle car", or 4+ seat, 2 door, mid to full size car with a large V8. (Torino, Galaxie, GTX, Charger, Chevelle, etc)

Our cars are technically just compacts... sporty compacts, but compacts. (Gremlin, Vega, Dart, etc)

If your engine is stock, those miatas will likely beat you in a strait line or the cornors.:2cents:

Nice car you got though. Build that motor up and fear no Mazdas except maybe a well built RX7 or RX8(y)

I thought they were originally produced as compact, fuel saving, grocery getters. :hide: Not that I feel they are now but I think that was the plan "back in the day"

Its no more a sports car than it is a muscle car. To us its them and more but not by the real world definition.

Definately was not considered a sports car.

Maybe the with the right options might have been considered a muscle car back then but not by most. Most thought it was an economy car.

Today with older cars getting more rare and if it's built right many people consider mine a muscle car at shows??

Yeah, back in the day, a car with a 302 was an 'economy' car. Even highly modded.
In today's terms, it's the difference between a guy with a modded Honda and a guy with a modded LS1 Z28 or GTO. No comparison.

I was very young at the time, looking at a 390 equipped car, and commented that it had a huge engine and must be a muscle car... The adults just chuckled and said, "That's a small engine. Muscle cars have much larger engines." They refered to anything over 420-something as qualifying.
Back then, a 390 was actually a puney engine.
Hard to put into context today, after we endured the dark ages of the 70s-80s.

Your car can grow up to be anything she wants to be. :bouncy: A while back (20+ years) a few buddies of mine got together and helps one of the truely bent smart a$$ friend of my youth put a 350 in a Vega. (Yea I still feel dirty having touched a bow tie) That was no sports car either but damn the looks on the faces of the guys driving vetts and other "Sports Cars" at the stop lights.:rofl2:

I was with my dad in 78 when he bought one of those new...
It wasn't a Vega by that time, they changed the name to Monza.
    It was a 5.0 v8 with a 4 speed and posi.
They weren't fast new. Again, even with a v8 it was considered well below the muscle crowd.
However, by the time I got to high school and was driving it, there was a hopped up 350 in there, and a lot of the 'uneeded' plumbing was gone.
So it would jump out there and surprise folks.
It never got a gear though. It still sits in my dad's garage with the original 3.08 gear.
If I ever get it again, it just might get a BBC and 9" rear. :evilsmile
    Either that or an LS7...
