    hello all.

im 17 and just recently bought my first car... a 74 4-door maverick (250 I6)
i (with the help of my ex-mechanic neighbor) got the car running perfectly, but the gas mileage is terrible! my calculations show that its getting in between 10 and 11 mpg. The car has about 100250 miles on it right now, and i just did a full tune up (plugs, points, oil, distributor... the basics)

this mileage is still in the can though...

    ...any ideas??

    thanks in advance

ps... how many miles/gallon does your maverick get?

Something is way off if your getting that bad of mileage, my guess is timeing. My car got horrible mileage until I got the timeing just right. Either that or you are lead footing it everywhere. I get around 18 in town and around 23 on the interstate if I keep it below 75 mph. I'd highly recommend getting rid of the points and converting to a Duraspark II system, or at the very least a Pertronix. Points suck, waste of time and money...

I get about 9-10 mpg but I have a lead foot with a 302, some tune up should get you into the 13-20 range.:162:

when i had the 170 in my car, i bought a new 1bbl carb for it, and when i drove it from kentucky to arizona in 2003, i got an average of 34.5 mpg the entire trip

if you want better gas mileage, rebuild the carb, change plugs, wires, get the timing dialed in, re gap the point on the distributor, change the oil, get tire pressures correct all around.. etc

a 250 should get better gas mileage than that... i would think about 20 at least,.... i have a 302 in my mav now, its a silght build, nothing fancy and i get about 14 mpg

    welcome aboard and good luck

will the duraspark make that big of a difference?
the carb was recently rebuilt and the plugs are new,
so if i just adjust the timing and the distributor, should that make a big difference?

34 mpg? You mean 24?

The Duraspark II ignition will be like a night and day diffrence.

Check your points, That's how I used to know when it was time to change the points. My mileage would go[IMG] I could almost watch my fuel gauge drop.

Sorry, but I don't think any Maverick is going to get 34 mpg, especially not with any straight 6.
