hello everyone ive got a 73 comet witha 302(all stock cept alum rad, elec fan, alum intake,4brl,and long tubes, but this stuff isnt installed yet) butttt ive found a 2.3 mustang motor for cheap and was wondering if id make more power from that with a turbo on it? also whatd id need to do to the 2.3 to make it dependable with turbo on it. thanks guys-
personally i would stick with the v8. tho it would be something new. and a friend of mine claims he has a 2.3L that puts out 380hp to the flywheel . only problem is its a 30 pass motor. wont last long. if you do it be sure to post pics.
will my semi stock motor need any upgrades for that? what kinda car would have a good turbo? what about getting one offa disel?
I'll offer up a different opinion. The 2.3 is one of the most durable short blocks ford has ever produced. It's right up there with the 250 truck engines. 380 HP at the crank is no problem with those engines, and they'll run forever. 500 HP at the crank is still fairly reliable. The cast iron heads can be ported to flow upwards of 250ish CFM, which is respectable and more than capable in a forced induction environment. The least reliable part on the whole engine is the electronics. The old EEC IV can be made reliable, but the TFI and PIP both suck. They're almost standard maintenence in my opinion. If you put a nice stand alone fuel and spark system on there, it would solve soooooooooo many problems. For performance upgrades you can get an aluminum head that will flow over 300 CFM at 28" from Esslinger. Use the new cometic head gasket with the gas filled fire rings, becasue these engines do have a tendency to blow out head gaskets from too much heat and firing pressure. The stock cylinder head has trouble getting the hot water out, which is easily fixed. I think the Esslinger head already addressed this. Anyway, there's a wealth of information at www.turboford.net I think this would be a really cool swap!! Good luck!
There's a ton of go fast goodies for the 2300. My brother-in-law builds some of the best 2300's around for mini-stock racing. Very stout engines. Go for it.
will i break even on price tho? how much is it going to take the 32 to get the 302 level? i know nothing bout how much turbo will help
do a search above for turbo, there is a lot of advice on setting up a 302 on this site. i think i remember someone discussing it on a 6 as well. the link ATO posted is for a site that has some great info for several motors as well.
the 2.3 are sweet i have a 84 mustang gt turbo that will take my mothers 94 gt 5.0. if your looking for a stop light to light racer the 2.3 doesn't have a chance(with out nos) but past 2600 rpm the thing is a demon feels like a 2 stroke cycles powerband. the bad part of the 2.3turbo is they have no low rpm torc an auto trans and a stall would work best. toput it in perspective the 72 mav 302 was 140hp and the 351c was 165hp the 84 2.3 was 155hp and by 88 210hp(88 t-bird tc) this motor in your car stock for stock the 2.3 will eat the 302 or 351w-c alive and get 30mpg. your call
sounds good, but after lookin at everything im ganna need ive decided to keep the 302, id need the turbo heads etc from a tbird, also the turbo
