Hey everyone I have a question about my stall converter. I ordered a new transmission from jackson racing on eBay and now that I am trying to mate it to my 302 I have an interference issue with the torque converter drain plug and the flex plate. The stock converter has the drain plug centered between the converter studs and this one has the drain plug 1 1/2 inches center to center from the converter stud to the drain plug. I have pictures of the torque converter as well as a possible PN for it.

Has anyone seen this particular type of converter I have and know if it may be correct but perhaps there is a different type of flex plate that I am supposed to be using OR did is there a possibility that the seller installed the wrong converter? Any suggestions are appreciated!

are you using a 10 1/2 inch flexplate or a 11 7/16. it needs to match the convertor. also need to have the same motor plate. :)

The flexplate stud holes are 10 1/2 inch center to center and of course as you guessed the converter is 11 7/16". So in converting to the new flywheel. I will need the new motorplate and I assume I will need a new starter too? Thanks for the help! The 11 7/16" would equate to the 164 tooth ring gear as well correct?

i just went to the garage and checked a couple of my convertors. the 10 1/2 is centered between the two studs, the 11 7/16 is about 1 1/2 inch from the studs. the starter is the same, but you also need a different bell housing to use that convertor. you need the larger bellhousing, the 164 tooth flexplate and the matching motorplate. sorry to be the bearer of bad news. don't ask me how i know this, cause you aren't the first.

just a heads up on another thing i learned about ford transmissions is the in 1970 they changed from a 24 spline input shaft to a 26 spline shaft so you also need to make sure you order for the early or late tranny. i learne this from experience also. thats why i have a 157 tooth, 26 spline, 10 1/2 in the car. and a 157 tooth 24 spline 10 1/2 and a 164 tooth 26 spline 11 7/16 sitting in the garage.

I just went out to the garage. I purchased the transmission new w/ the converter installed so the bell housing works. I just have to score the motorplate and the flexplate. Time to do some more on-line shopping!!! lol. I always love the hang-ups. Everytime you think ya got it figured out... The drive shaft that I have works as well, I just checked that as well! lol woo what a relief

Wow some more fun information regarding my problem! The transmission that I purchased online is as i've known since i received it a pan fill transmission. I posted on this board and asked if i needed case or pan fill. Everyone of course replied case fill so that is what i specified to the seller. It looks as if the seller botched the order. I know that the pan fill would work in my car but i dont think the headers will lol. I emailed the seller to see if there would be a way that I could exchange this transmission for the appropriate model so that I dont have to bend over backwards to make this work... I expected this to be smooth. lol... what was i thinkin. I still have three weeks to get this all together before I have to return to fort carson from leave. Gotta love it!

    Thanks for all the insight!
