My car is not, never has been, and never will be for sale. I found this car bound for the crusher 6 years ago, and have a lot of time, money, and most of all, good times and very good friends associated with it. It will be with me till I am gone.
I find it hard to believe that any of you guys would not sell your cars for any price... I didn't say mine were for sale, or that I wouldn't think long and hard about it if someone came and offered more than they were worth... However I was honest in that if someone waved 60 Ben Franklins in my face, twice what the car is worth, I would probably take them up on it. If you think about it, how much would it take to break down you resistance to sell? It's easy to say no in a thread, but if someone waved cash in your face, how much would it take? Earl, for example... If I waved twice the realistic value of you car at you, would you consider? Keep in mind that none of our responses are offers to buy or sell... Just discussion. Also, all you folks that say I wouldn't sell, or I would sell for $(enter crazy number here)... What is your car worth to a party that would like to buy it, but has no attachment and other prospects? Like I said, mine are: $2000 to 3000 and $200-300 for the other... Not that I would ever sell them for that. Dave
This is a very thought provoking Thread, My first instinct is to say no way never. My 74 Comet has been in my possession since '97 just in the last 2 weeks, I finally got a lot done on it, still not reasonably sure I could start driving it daily, Drove it last Thursday and stopped to check something and shut it off, when I got back in I had zero electrical this was at 11 pm , 3 miles from home out in the country. It just happens I didn't have my cell, Luckily I jiggled the positive and negative wires on the battery (which are tightly attached to the battery posts )and it came to life and I drove it home, Tried to start her up yesterday same thing. Next week I am driving it in to a local Automotive electrical shop to assess my Gremlins, Point is I have put less than 300 miles in 9 years on this car. In the last 2 weeks about 150 of those were driven. I've come this far without selling, probably won't now... but if I got enough out of her AND had a replacement,( nothing less than a Grabber or better yet GT) , It would be hard not to consider, I am taking it tomorrow for a rust repair estimate. Maybe my tune will solidify one way or the other after that. It'd be hard to turn down $3000 today, to be honest. Drive her daily for 8 years? probablly wouldn't take any amount.
For a nicely done stocker I'd put it in the $5k-$7k range. For a nicely done mod with a healthy V8, updated suspension, wheels, interior, etc. I would say $10k-$15k
No amount would take that '71 Comet. Someone waveing money in your face is trying to tempt you into selling. If someone tried that with me, they wouldn't try it again...
Stated value policies are everything when it comes to classic car insurance. Without it, you might only be given street prices for your car no matter what you have invested in it. A quick check of NADA blue book on a 1972 Maverick Standard and Grabber shows a low, average and high prices as follows. Standard 1972 V8 powered Maverick $1300 - 2925 - 4325 Grabber 1972 V8 powered $2500 - 5375 - 11,750 Deduct 20% if I6 powered - may change with your zip code. Interesting, isn't it.
Dave; I suppose if you waved $25K in my face, I would have to think about it long and hard. I think, as you say, every car has a price. But, that being said, it would be a very difficult decision to let it go. You can always build another car, but it never would be the same. Some folks get a bit attached to their rides, some don't.
I know I have a price....not sure what it would be....depended on how hungry I was But I am sure if my POWERBALL numbers hit....I could buy any car I wanted
personally, i think my car is probably about the same cost or less as a casket. i think when i die i want to be buried in it. seriously though, i would have to have something in similar condition lined up for much less money before id give up the one i have. not too likely.
Ok I will echo what has been said here. Mine aint for sale. I have never had as much fun with a car as I have with my Maverick. However, I decided to check the prices to make sure I was insured enough to cover its loss after my son's '64 Malibu SS was stolen this summer. I was under insured by a bunch. Ok, back to the point. I went to: nada.com This is a website for vehicle pricing that is set up by the car dealer association. My Mav is a 250 , C4 and it books out at between $2304. low retail - $4988 Average and $11,115. High retail prices. And that is 20% less then a V8 car per the dealers guide book. This is not a price guide for restored or resto mods. These are basic stockers. What's reality? Wasn't it last year that a Grabber V8 sold on ebay for $20,000. Our cars have been overlooked, but are now getting noticed. As for the insurance issue, I have Grundy and covered for a stated value. My car is not my daily driver and is one of 4 collector type cars I have. My Mav insurance is less then $100 a year for full coverage. Make sure you are covered for a potential loss. My son was not. His car replacement value was $22,000+, but he was under insued by more then 2/3 of the current market or replacement cost based on what he had paid a few years ago. We didn't predict what would happen with car prices. He will never be able to replace his car.
I would not sell my car, but I would trade it for a human liver AND heart pending my need of them... and even then... I may have to pass. It was my first car. I've had it since the first day of my first REAL job (taxed) and its the next best thing to just pulling my money out the bank and burning it LoL. I love my money pit!!!! And if you all have some extra to burn, think about it first and then throw it in my pit Kyle
