Next weekend I`m going to go pick up a `69 1/2 mav for parts and I need to get it stripped and out of here real quick like so how do I remove the windshilds in one pice ? Thanks
Elliot the easiest way to do it without damaging the glass is to remove the chrome trim then use a sharp blade and cut the rubber gasket from the outside. You may need to run the knife around the inside perimeter also then the glass should just pop out.
Just curious ... do you need the windshield or just saving it? They are readily available new so I personally don't see the point. Actually I've parted out several cars and the only glass I will save is the tinted glass (all pieces except the windshield) ... with rear tinted windshields being the most valuable since, unlike flippers and door glass, it is rarely saved and not available at glass shops ...
Exactly like Maverick1970 said, only I've never had to cut on the inside. Once you cut the rubber lip off the top of the windshield it will come out very easily.
Dan, the wings can get a little tricky. i had the glass shop send me to a yard when someone busted one of mine. mavowar, so violent and aggressive. makes me smile:evilsmile
Dixie Maverick! I do not understand why you would not keep a used good front windshield. I just picked one up from a junk yard for $70. They wanted $175 new here. Is there a problem with used windshields?
Some used windshields tend to be a little foggy around the edges. As long as it's nice and clear and not full of rock chips, clean it up good and use it. I personally feel like Dan...I want the new one in my car. If you've ever worn eye glasses before, it's the same feeling you get when you go in and get your new prescription...everything is SO clear! If money is tight...use the used one.
Generally 20+ year old windshields are so peppered with nicks from road dust & dirt they aren't worth it ... and old tinted windshields tend to turn a Murky Brown color for some reason ... all the other windows remain blue ... matching the blue of a nice new tinted windshield ....
Used windshield is fine for a driver. For a show car, I would get a new hands down. Most old used winshields I have seen have streaks from the wipers and just general small imperfections. And thats if they don't have the white around the edges. $70 for a used windshield? Ouch!
I wish I would have read this thread last week. It is not so much that money is tight, but it is adding up. I know it does not have any cracks and chips but it is dirty. I have not cleaned it yet. Hopefully it will clean up nice. If not I will buy a new one. Thanks for the response. Is it a good idea to replace the clips?
