tried the gas in the carb.. no go. it only coughed twice tho. and then nevermore. im fresh out of ideas.
Fuel, air and spark in the right combination should fire. Two things I would now look for,, one, big vacuum leak. Secondly, I see that it is a freshly rebuilt engine? Run a compression test. Dan
how do i run a compression test? and only one vaccum line...maybe i needs the original setup on vacuum system??? only problem with that is i have no clue how they went. only vacuum i have right now is from carb to advance
Compression test is done by using a compression tester. It is a tool. Get a good one. Vacuum leaks can be anywhere from a bad intake gasket, intake itself, carb, carb gasket etc. But real hard to find when car wont run. Dan
hrmmm... now that you mention it. i did notice that my spacer gasket was leaking gas jsut barely a trickle but could that cause it?? i will be going on vacation in a week and a half so i cant spend too much more money this soon.. but if its not too expensive i will get a tester sunday. one more timing question tho. when i set the mark on the harmonic balancer to 0 degrees, the piston can still go up a tad more. if the piston is exactly at the top then it shows5 degrees below 0.. is this right or do i maybe have the gears off by a tooth or so?
I dont think 5 degrees will make that much of a difference in firing a motor. Have you tried to turn the dist. a few degrees each way just to see if there is any difference? Dan
You need to run a vacuum line from the intake to the vacuum modulator on the trans. You need some help with it, let me know. You're only 11 miles or so from me. I'd be glad to come over and help out.
when you say you rebuilt it, how far did you go with it? I've had engines miswired and still run. you can set points at about .030 and get it to run. buy a compression tester, they are inexpensive but necessary and if you have the means, go to a Pertronix system or maybe an MSD system. you need to make sure everything is torqued down to proper spec and sealed very well. did you install timing chain and gears in the right sequence? and lined up right? just trying to help.......
good point jamie.. i did do that... that and the one from the carb to the dizzy are the only vacuum lines i have...it looks like i wont be able to work on it again till sunday. (if i can get the day off) it helps that i make the schedule tho.
i went with a stock rebuild kit from autozone. new cam and bearing rings and such.....i DO have the pertronix system but havent installed it.. rather uninstalled it and put points back in when i couldnt get it to start .. didnt know if it was causing my problem or not. (was only 60% sure of the wiring and found out i DID have it wrong i think) will research that later on. i distinctly remember lining up the dots on the crank and cam gears but anythingis possible at this stage
jamie, you being an ...Ace...on the ...ford 6cyl....maybe you could drop by and give him a hand...frank...
