My son and I recently bought a 1975 Maverick. The Ford shop manual says it came with a 302 with a 3 speed auto trans which it still has. It has the Grabber style hood but according to the manual it's not a grabber edition. I thought only the grabber models came with a 302. Appearently I was wrong on that one. Does anyone know if the hood could be/is original or is it and addition by a previous owner.

Someone has added that Grabber hood. No 1975 Maverick came with one. You could get any Maverick with a 302 including a 4 door, except in '70. Likewise, you could get a Grabber with a 6 cylinder or V8.

If the vin has a 93 in it, it is a grabber. If the hood is the 2 scoop style, then the hood is not original. Things get changed over a 30 year period. Most grabbers had 6 cylinder engines in them. Sounds like an interesting car, Glad you found us.

    Thanks

Thanks for the info. You confirmed my thoughts. I figured for $75 how could I go wrong, and yes it even runs and drives but has a problem in the steering, play in the steering box.

Mavericks get no love, mine was only $200 because everyone believed it was just a "Pinto". Good luck with it

The steering box is easy to adjust. Simply loosen the set-nut on the Steering Box and turn the screw clockwise with a flat-tip screwdriver until it stops (don't over-tighten it, as it can cause the steering to bind). Then re-tighten the set-nut. You should also check your other front ends parts for play as well, Idler Arm, Tie Rod ends, Ball Joints etc.. Good luck with the Mav.
