I have a Factory Ford wheel in my car ... I'm not saying I'm a wuss or anything ... I'm saying for a daily driver I like the P/S and the difference is quite noticable when going back and forth between a P/S Maverick and a non-P/S Maverick ....
I have manual steering in my car, and the biggest factor in easing the steering, was to put smaller tires on. It was like a Mac truck with 225X60X15's on there, but I put 215X60X15's on, it was like night and day. So much easier to steer and turn.
earl, i drove a peterbuilt with manual, even with the massive bus steering wheel it was harder than the highboy. maybe you need grease on yours
sierra; I got it straightened out. It was the tires. I changed to a smaller tire, and the car has a new personality. I keep it greased up really well, and the alignment is good. Funny how the tires can put so much resistance into the steering.
I have 215/60s on the front, and after trial and error, feel that I like the look and want to stay with them, so those are promising words... One more point in favor...and one more worry knocked down...al...most....there...
My first impression was that it did take a little bit more effort to turn....which I liked. I wanted more steering feedback. It is a little stiff for my 5'1" 100 lb. goddaughter's taste but I have no problems parallel parking, steering in parking lots, etc. BTW, I have bad shoulder problems (torn rotator cuffs) so if it was too stiff, I wouldn't be comfortable driving it. Stock steering wheel, power steering box, 235/60/14 on the front. I am changing the 235's to a set of 205/60/15's to match the 235/60/15's that are on the back. It's an appearance thing. The tires on the front were on different wheels than the backs.
Cool!!! THAT is the kind of feedback I have been looking for! (I know, I have heard this from at least 5 other guys, but this is THE DAY AFTER making the swap, and not trying to recall it from months or years ago). I will do it, I really want to free up the space under the hood, reduce drips, freeup horsepower, and tighten up the steering play. Thanks for the info (and the patience from everyone else who has heard me ranting about this for the past 2 years )
Ok well I also like the new now from what i understand i will need to change my brackets for my alt what do i use for this can i buy them from a parts house. And what part do i need jayman said that 130$ one from mustang plus will the $65 part from mustang unlimited work the same?
put a p/s box on the non p/s car and then let us know what you think...then you will have apples and apples to compare...the p/s box on a non p/s car is a lot easier to turn. the turning radius is shorter..JMO...frank...
I would have thought the other way around... So, it is EASIER to turn with a power steering box on a manual...? Then I am even more "there"
I went to the Mustangs unlimited site and found the part I used listed for $159. What $65 part are you refering to? Can you post a link so we can tell you if it will do what you want? The brackets that I bought were from Scott Drake Reproductions for a 289 '67 Mustang without power steering. I had to use washers as a spacer to get the correct alignment of the pulleys, but it was a 10 minute job to get it all aligned and adjusted.
Back in the eighties I had 14x8 front wheels on the front with 215 -60/14 tires and an 11 inch 3 spoke steering wheel...My wife took her drivers test (she was 19) in my car and could not paralell park it. She wasn`t strong enough! So the guy giving the test gave her a passing grade anyway " She had a handicap " he said. Then I sold him a set of of 302 cylinder heads for his dark green Maverick!
Now thats funny! My brother almost drove the '72 to get his license yesterday, but ended up driveing my mom's Lincoln LS instead.
