Hello everybody...haven't been on the board for a while...been really busy. But I have a bit of an emergency...somebody slashed my tire last night, and i have to get the spare on tonight, because I have an early appointment tomorrow - I also don't have a lot of time this evening, so that's why I need some help ASAP. Anyways, I tried to do it last night, but I can't get the friggin hubcap off (keep in mind, I'm pretty mechanically challenged....). Is there something I need to know? Or is it just some basic mechanical knowledge that I should have, but I don't? Anyways, any help would be appreciated!!! Thanks, David
Which style of hubcaps do you have 1 piece or 2. Either one you can pop off with a large screwdriver or the angled end of the factory lug wrench.
Well, I don't have the factory lug wrench...which is another problem...my dad has a newer Ford explorer...I'm wondering if that wrench will fit? If not, I'm basically screwed...but other than that, I'm not sure if it's a 1 or 2 piece...cuz I don't know the difference. I know there was like a larger rim piece that popped off first, and then there's the circle in the middle.. - so I'm thinking 2 piece? And how do I get a screwdriver under the edge of the cap? There's no leeway inside the wheel to get it under.
Are your wheels like these http://mmb.maverick.to/gallery/showimage.php?i=1823&c=8&userid=4621 If so, The Explorer handle may have a end like you need or you can use a large screwdriver. You will need to remove the outer trim ring first by inserting the screwdriver between the trim ring and the wheel. Push the handle end of the screwdriver against the tire to pry the ring off. You may have to do this in several locations to remove it. You will hear the ring as it is coming off. Once the outer ring is off do the same to the center hubcap. The wheel will likely have raised areas that contact the cap, between them is where you want to insert the screwdriver. This cap should come off easier that the ring.
