It sounds like an accelerator pump to me, but who knows? As for a different carb:
Edelbrocks are easier to keep in tune, and can usually bolt on and go. BUT:
They won't make as much power as a holley. Holley's are more difficult to tune, but when you get 'em right, you'll notice the difference.

you have a motorcraft 2 barrel right??..these are the EASIEST carbs to work on that have EVER been produced...you can fix these carbs without even unbolting them from the intake ( I have even run them with the top off for adjustments)..most likely the accelerator pump is bad or restricted...napa carries the AP diaphragm for these...these carbs CAN produce a good amount of power ( they made 429's with a 2v IF memory serves) holley jets will screw into the motorcraft 2v carbs also. I have made them run really well

yeah, I always thought those carbs were neat. They're so simple that they look like they shouldn't even work. But if you know how to tune them they'll run with any Holley.

How about this......79 302 2v with motorsraft 2150 carb...Rebuilt myself and now the thing smokes like hell.....Dunno, If you rev it up it flutters, and besides that if i reach over and clost the choke up about 98%, Still smokes like crazy, but the throttle responds a lot better and w/o the fluttering......Sounds like a vacuum problem, but i dont know...Can you help me?
