I had driven my Maverick to the store the other night, and I parked beside someone's new Monte Carlo SS. It was blue with white racing detailing etc. Anyway, when I came back out the owner was gettin in his car and seen me and said "You have a real jewel there!." I thank him and he went on his merry way. I have to be honest here, my 72' is a 20 footer. From 20 feet away it looks great!, but you get closer you notice some of imperfections etc. I guess what amazed me was, that I know how much you can pay for a clean Maverick/Comet compared to what that Chevy guy paid for his new Monte Carlo! Other than the it being Ford, I will keep the Maverick! It never ceases to amaze me how this cars get the attention of most people. My girlfriend is constantly telling when we are driving around that people are looking and staring. I never notice because I am paying attention to the traffic etc. I remember 18 years ago when I was fixing up my first Maverick, and people would look at me with wonder and say "Why a Maverick?" Today people look at the Maverick say "Nice car!" I guess things have changed for the better. Sorry so long. Take care out there!
People tend to look at something different, or something they haven't seen in a while. While following a friend down the highway in my primered 69 Mustang fastback, he said I get way more looks than his lowered supercharged Saleen. The Saleen just looks to much like a GT, while people don't see old Mustangs very often in traffic. His car is worth about 5 times mine. I also have some friends with Harleys. One spent abpout 15k customizing his, and the first night out with it, we went to a local Harley bar. I rode my 1966 Honda Superhawk. When we came out of the bar, the crowd was around my little Hawk, and virtually ignoring his Harley. He was pissed, but his Harley looked a lot like the thousands of other customized Harleys out there. When I go to car shows, I don't even see Chevelles or Camaros any more. I gravitate to the unusual, like AMCs and Fords and old Chryslers. Anything I haven't seen 1000 times. At a recent show, the largest crowd was around a 1971 Pinto that was in absolute showroom condition. Nobody had seen one in years. And I get compliments from guys with Chevys and Mopars. I don't think the whole brand loyalty is as intense as some people think. Most people just appreciate a nice old car, period.
About a year ago I took my car to a monthly car show at a local sports bar that is very near my house. Now mind you most of the cars that show up to this place are total trailer queens, mostly mustangs, camaros, shelby's, and some rods mixed in. Well to make a long story short I parked my car in a back corner and just after I got my lawn chair out of the trunk I had four people milling around my car and they started all saying how they used to have one in h.s. or how a friend had one and asking questions about the mav. It's amazing how many people used to have a mav, or still do but it's sitting in their backyard.
