Hi I need a little help! My son and I just put a B&M Shift improver shift kit into a 1974 c-4 tranny, and now the car has no reverse, neutral, and only kind of park. All the gears want to go forward, including the above mentioned. Any one that can help me figure out where I went wrong and how to fix it would be great! Though now that I think of it, the positions that should be reverse and neutral slip when the car moves forward, but 1,2 and drive seem s:cry: olid?

Be sure the shift lever is positioned in the slot on the end of the manual shift valve, of the valve body. Sounds like it may be in the wrong spot when the body was reinstalled.

    Mine did that too.

Like Old Guy said, you gotta make sure that plunger is lined up with the shift lever correctly. There is a groove around the end of the plunger that has to line up so the shift rod falls into it when you put it all together. Can be kinda tricky, especially upside down, with fluid dripping in your face.

Hope that helps. I read the instructions and couldn't "see" it in my mind until I messed up the first time. Then finally figured out what they were saying by playing around with it a bit.

    Thanks

Thanks, I am from Wake Forest. I am going to look at it tonight, if it is not raining again, like it has been for weeks! I hope this works.

being a father son project. when you drop the throttle body and try to align the plunger you can put it in and have him shift each gear to make sure you got the right start notch. had my wife do this for me and it made it a million times easier.

    got her moving!

:slap: We removed the valve body and moved the manual valve and that seemed to do it! Thanks for everyone who helped and offered suggestions! We haven't had it out for a hiway test yet, because it still has open headers, but I think that we got it! Thanks again everyone!:bananaman

    whatever...

Anyway, we tested it and it is not shifting into drive or second automatically, we can manually shift it to second, but it seems sluggish. we were reading this thread ( http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=24835&highlight=shift+kit )
but there was no resolution there. It is exactly the same problem we are having.:(

    little opinion

sounds like an out of adjustment modulator, or lack thereof. make certain you got the line hooked up and it aint leakin IE holes in rubber portions, this will cause no third gear and not being an auto shift from first to second, although like you say it will let it shift 1-2 manually. third gear will feel much like neutrual if not hooked up or whatnot, check that thing and see

We put a new modulator and vacuum line on all to no avail. I hooked the line to the same vauum block that the vacuum advance for the distributor is on. That should do it right? It seems like the car will down shift, I swear I heard it, but no upshift. And like I said, Drive feels like somewhere between drive and 2nd. Thanks for all of your suggestions guys! If it weren't so cost prohibitive I would just buy a new valve body!

    New valve body

Hey, new TCI valve body and vacuum modulator, and still no drive. Am I not getting enough vacuum somewhere? I am going to go over the lines and adjust the modulator this weekend, but does anybody have a vacuum diagram? Also, when we put the headers on we didn't hook up the big blue canister on the passenger fender well. I assumed that it was just for emissions. Answers anyone? By the way, thanks for all your help!

The blue canister is just the breather tank for the gas tank. It's commonly called the carbon canister. Having it off shouldn't effect the transmission. Wish I could help you with the transmission, but I gave up on automatics almost 30 years ago. I just run manual transmissions now. Simple tranny's for simple minds I suppose!
