Thanks everyone!! It is an annual event the the Northwoods Shelby Club holds at Road America. It isn't fender rubbing racing, it's against the clock. Usually it is a three day event but this year we lost our Friday to the Champ Car guys, a number of teams needed a practice day. But Friday and Sunday are usually the high speed touring days(non-competitive,passing only in the straights with a point around) and Saturday is the Autocross(timed runs with the same passing rules. They group people by previous years times, car ability, and driver experience, there was four groups of about 15 cars. The class I was in is CP(which is '65-'66 Mustang and Shelby, race prepared) RA is a 4 mile road course, my top speed is about 130 maybe 135, it's hard to tell my race tires are shorter so that throws off the speedo, I know it's pointing straight down at that point.

Check out the club website www.nwshelbyclub.com click on the frostbits link and go to page two, it may take some time for things to load but there is some pics and info about the car there, about half way down the page. Also, chack around on the rest of the site there's pics of past events, and other info there.

As far as the grille goes, that was the cheapest one I could find, needed some repair, but it just so happened to have lights in it.

I'll post info about the car in a different thread.

    Cool Story!

What in the way of safety equipment is required to run in your
    class?

-rollbars I am sure-but what type?
    -harness?
    -auto fire extinguisher?
    -fuel cell?
-any lanyards on moving parts or wire tieing?

I used to work the track at Road America, and unless things have changed, you can basically run a street car without any special equipment. Especially with the Shelby Club, many of these cars are bone stock collector cars.

If memory serves right, all cars get a safety inspection. There can be no broken glass and all mechanical systems (brakes, steering, exhaust) must be in very good operating condition. All cars need mirrors. No fluid leaks from anywhere and you have to have an overflow bottle on the radiator. No loose items in the passenger compartment or trunk. In fact, I think they make you remove the tire and jack completely. No extinguisher is required, but if you have one it must be secured down. Convertibles do need a roll bar and a 4 or 5 point seat belt. Regular cars need NO rollbar but you must have at least a 3 point belt. All drivers need a helmit. You can even have one passenger with you in some events.

Might have missed something, it has been a few years since I was out there.

I'm sure Gunslinger will correct me if they have changed anything since I was involved there - Road America is an awsome place. I worked the Fire / Rescue end of things there in 84-86. My friends were still racing there up until about 5 years ago, that is the last time I was over there.

What the average speed you got to slow down to for turns 5,6, and 8 in a mostly stock maverick/mustang like car? That track looks like a load of fun!

What is lost in the map is the beautiful hilly kettle morain landscape. Along with the turns you have dips, hills, rocky walls and woods all around you. My favorite corner to work was #12. Lots of acton over there and some great racing too!

Here is a video clip of a car running the track. For some reason the video starts out after turn #8 going into the carousel. That big red SNAP-ON bridge is at the start of the carousel which is about in the middle of the course (see that map I posted)

I'll have to time this video lap against Gunslingers run! :drive:

Acornridge has a darn good memory, the three point belt requirment first came up a couple of years ago. But we did have a guy with an original '65 Shelby come up with just lap belts, he didn't want to cut up the car, almost had to turn him away, but with help from some of the club guys, he improvised and was able to run. Depending on lap time they do recommend a sinlge layer drivers suit, at least. I think that it if you are in the 2:30's or 2:40's.

As far as speed for the sharper turns 5,6,8,12, in an early type Ford, that depends on the size of the drivers kiwi's. I think I may be doing around 30-35??? Other guys are cornering a lot harder, espicially the fox bodies and newer Mustangs, they handle so much better that the early cars. I'm not sure of that, but I average around 82-83 mph.
It is a blast, when I started I was driving my '95 Crown Vic, not setting any speed records but it was still fun.
I'll be sure to keep people posted when they update the website with this last events info.

Here's some more pics from it.

The blakc ragtop was an '04 Cobra that lost it in the kink, there were other incidents, like a '66 Hertz Shelby that lost it in the kink as well, that one was hard to look at. No one was hurt though.

It's open to anyone who buys a club membership, used to be just Ford and Ford powered only, but declining participation caused the club to open up to other makes. But it is pretty cool to see other cars out there.

    More pics.............................
