I took the compressor out of the car last night. With no compressor the de frost still blows. Will it still de frost the front windows? I do not want to put the compressor back on. Also can I leave the condensor off ?
Anybody who knows how a defroster actually works will tell you that it wont be as effecent, if it defrosts at all. The evaporator is called that for a reason. But who needs it anyway?...
What does the A/C have to do with the defrost? My car dosen't have A/C and the defrost works just fine...
it defrosts just fine without a/c. i've gone thru 2 winters so far with no problem. the defrosters worked well in cars long before a/c became a common accesory.
Okay so I can take the condensor off too, Right? I'm trying to remove some of the extra weight now. Or just stuff I don't need.
If you're getting rid of the A/C permanently, you can remove everything that has to do with it. You could even go as far as swapping the heater core/blower motor box out under the dash and getting rid of all those vaccume lines.

New car use the a/c parts to dry the air thus making the defroster work much better. Mavericks do not use the a/c for this but, you can make your old system run the a/c in the defrost mode. All you have to do is file a detent that will let the a/c kick on. Or you can make a remote switch for the a/c and turn it on in any mode
My '75 runs the compressor in defrost mode. My '72 doesen't. If I don't need or want the compressor on when I'm in my '75, I just put the selecter lever in the off position to direct the air to the windshield. When it is rainy and humid, the compressor on removes the fog much faster.
Take your heavy, likely non working 30 year old A/C junk off and your defroster will still clear you window just fine. I promise. Period.
Now I will have to tear a newer maverick apart (74-77) I thought they started using the a/c in the defrost around 78-79.
I'm with you Jamie. That thing is heavy. I don't know for sure if it will work but the compressor is staying off. Air still come out the de frost vents when I turn it on but it is warm air. I'm thinking that will give me heat in the winter also. I don't need a/c.
