I was just curious about something that is probably stupid for me to ask: What is the purpose of the air cleaner and everything that connects to it? I mean the hose that connects from the oil filler cap to the air cleaner? Whats the point?

Thats so the motor can re-burn "blow by" instead of venting it into the atmoshpere. The air cleaner keeps birds from being sucked in:cool: .

Hopefully a little more than birds will be filtered out. Dust and dirt causes wear on the cylinder bores and rings. The cleaner the air your engine uses, the longer it will last.

If you havent alredy you should replace the filter in the breather and replace the PCV sytem.I have seen so many engines go to waste because these things werent taken care off. Also a free-flowing air filter(ex:K&N) will help the engine breath better and you can actualy feel the difference in performance...best of all they last longer and save you $$ in the long run.:bouncy:

the PCV system is the valve with a hose going to the air cleaner, there are many variation on them, on a 6CYL the hose shoud be connected from the breather to the air cleaner. On other engines like mine it is connected to the carb, some dont even have a system at all.You might want to get one of these air cleaners they look better IMO,they're made for mustangs but they will fit.

running it w/o the filter can cause alot of problems especially when your tuning the carb.

Acutally, on 6 cylinders it is connected to the carb spacer plate under the carb. You're thinking about the other hose that connects from the oil cap to the air cleaner. Any auto parts store should be able to look up what air filter and PCV valve you need.
