Times have really changed...

Tonight I took my 73 Grabber to cruise night, it's the first time I've taken a Maverick in over six years, I got swarmed before I even got the car parked, I couldn't believe it. Even with it's faded and peeling paint, guys were all over it, taking pictures and crawling under it, it's a far cry from the last time I used to go, no one even cared, was amazing to see, made me feel good

 

That's great! I can see how it would have made you feel good!
I've been to many car shows and cruises around here and I have not seen a Maverick or Comet yet.......I cannot wait to get mine out there next summer, and see what kind of reaction I get from people who aren't used to seeing them.

 

Cool!! Its the ones that are different that attract attention.

 

I talked to my local "paint guy" about my Maverick, and he was asking if it was a coupe, 2-door, or 4-door...he is into older cars, like 30s-40s models and assumed I was talking about a really old car. I led him on, since he gave what sounded like good suggestions for paint and primer supplies...

 

That's great.....people are finally take notice of something besides mustangs and camar... (you know the rest)
I took mine out last fall and got the same response, like you faded paint and all.

haha what Jamie said! I don't get too many comments on a daily basis, but once in a while. Sometimes I've walked out in the parking lot to find a group of people drooling on it. I have my tattoo shops sticker on the back window and they've had guys come in the shop asking if the person that owns the car works there.

 

Yup Dave,, it has changed over the years. In the end, all cars that are popular originally, become collectible, and close to the heart.

its cool when just so many average people on the streets are like "hey cool! its a MAVERICK!". There have been a few times i drove up to a car show and i cant say I havent gotten a dirty look or two from the guy with a fully restored GTO or Mustang or something. Here comes some teenager with a primered up Maverick of all things and he's got more people gathered around it than the comaros or t-buckets etc.

My comment to a friend who was p'd because his 68' Camaro was overlooked at a local cruise-in for an award;

"Do you realize what it takes for you to stand out in a car show with your 68' camaro?" "now, do you know what it takes for me to stand out in a car show with my maverick?.......all I have to do is show up"

 

I have noticed people like anything that is from the 60's or early 70's, even 4 doors and wagons. If it looks different than a modern egg it is well received, at least where I live. Another thing I have noticed is the almost total lack of brand loyalty. The younger enthusiasts I meet could care less if it is Ford, GM, Dodge, even AMC. If it looks aggressive, they like it. This is good for the classic car hobby.

yeah thats me. I did start out with a GM but at this point any old american car, any brand is cool in my book. I've said before, i park my maverick right next to my cutlass and monte carlo and dont think nothing of it. I mean you could give me anything from the late 70's back and I'd be happy. Im not too thrilled with the 80's other than the GM G-Body, but whatever they are they're classics. be it a grimlin or a hemi challenger its still cooler than the generic 4cyl econo-trash everybody's pumping out and driving. ford vs. chevy? who cares? they're both better than honda
