Hm. Just from thinkin' about what I saw, I can't fathom how the center bolt can stay in place.

Do not remove the center bolt it holds the harmonic balancer to the crankshaft. Removing the smaller bolts will allow the pulleys to be removed.

i almostt 99.999% sure the center bolt stays it holds the dampner to the crank,, and the 4 bolts hold the pulleys to the dampner

Welp, the sprinkler system at the apartment complex got the parking lot covered in water, so not tonight. It'll be very early tomorrow, I'll let you guys know if I find something funny.

I've had two 302 with a crank pulley wobble and what I found was a stretched crank bolt....remove the crank bolt and put a straight edge on the bolt theads. If you see light between the bolt threads (to ones touching)and straight edge, replace that bolt. If you only retorque it...it will more than likely fail, and you will be really upset.

You might have the center cracked on the inner pulley. I have seen the pulleys crack around the bolt holes - you will need another pulley to fix it if that is the problem. I can't think of anything else that would cause the inner pulley to be loose while the outer pulley is tight.

It probably is a cracked pulley

    Another issue.

I cannot turn these bolts at all. The whole pulley turns. What's the best way to get this stuff to hold still?

I'm doing this with a rachet -- I have no battery operated power tools, and besides, I don't have the juevos to pull the radiator.

I assume you've taken the belts off? The reason I ask is that the tension alone is 'usually' enough to keep the pullies from turning.

You can try using a pry bar against the pulley or get a "Strap Wrench" from your local parts store to use as a back-up to the pulley (.... or put the belts back on and tension them (it) very tightly).

Good luck - and "watch them knuckles!" :yup:

I left the belts on, assuming it would help keep the pulleys tight.

And the knuckles have already gone to hell.

Try using a long handle ratchet... You need to use sudden impacting strokes (hard to describe). Try to be an impact with your hand tool? I have also used a block of wood and a jack under the pulley and put slight pressure on the pulley being carefull not to bend the pulley or start lifting the car too much. If only you had a friend... he could try to hold the pulley for you while you break the bolts loose. With the belts on and tight you should only need a little more resistance for them to give. If someone has been there and put locktight on them then you are screwed and will need to do something like get the bolts impacted off with a real impact or try another idea I have which some will disagree with...good luck let us know how you do...:drink:

Got the pulleys off.. no damage, or nothing obvious. On the rear of the dual-pulley there's a scratch that runs a pretty long way, but I doubt that's causing it.

I'm not sure.. I think the pulleys may be sitting too far forward, but judging by eye, all the belts look lined up.

    I'm feeling hopeless right now.

    Pictures

Snapped some photos of the damage I found on the rear pulley.

The first three pictures are of the backside of the pulley, the last photo is of the front.

Let me know where to go from here. I've cleaned them up and just plan on putting them back on soon to see if they were just on there incorrectly.

So's I went out to put the pulleys back on, and to my surprise the inner pulley does not fit snugly over the crank. And now my workspace is covered in ants.

Looks like "until next weekend" .. crap.
