ok, all you guys with trailers that have a winch on the front lets hear what brand and pounds you have. I want to put one on my new trailer and will most likley do what craig did on his with the removable hitch in the floor. I saw a 1700lb at northern for 99 bucks but think that is a little weak. 2000 lb warn on ours. It's the ATV winch....got it from a guy I work with. Double the cable over with a block and it will pull a car up the ramps in park. Single line will pull it up just fine as long as the tires are inflated. You have to keep in mind that rolling loads pull MUCH more easily. As long as you don't plan on pulling a car/truck up the ramp with 4 flat tires, a 2000-2500 lb should do the job.
I went with Harbor Freight Portable Electric Winch $39.99 [font=arial, sans-serif]Recover vehicles, trailer your boat, pull stumps. I use Superwinch 4000# on all my trailers (3) and I wire a deep cycle marine battery for them that is mounted on or in the trailers. I have used 5 of this brand and they work great, they are not the cheap run of the mill type winches, they run about $395.00 and the battery usually goes for about $59.95, mine are hard mounted which means they don't come off and the open trailer has a winch cover on it.
I bought a 3,000 lb winch from Harbor Freight for $119. I replaced the cable after about 10 pulls and the winch finally gave up the ghost after about 15-18 uses. I pulled a non-rolling '68 Galaxie out of a cow pasture in NW Arkansas, I pulled pallets of stucco onto the trailer, and I pulled a 6,000 lb truck onto the truck. I figured I got money's worth out of that winch.
Mine is a #4500 Super Winch. It will pull a Maverick up on the trailer with 4 flat tires and all 4 wheels locked up. As long as I can back up to it.....it is coming home with me.
All that Terry used that winch for, and of all things, it failed trying to pull a small gazebo onto his trailer. My grandpa actually had Goats in his field for a while. One night I left the windows down in my '71 F250 and they ate the entire dash pad right out of it. He finally got tired of them eating the tarps on his lawnmowers and stuff and got rid of them. Damn Goats will eat anything.
I have a Superwinch 1500. Sounds kinda lightweight you say? Maybe so but I have a beavertail trailer with long fold-down ramps. Makes for a really easy incline, and I have loaded wrecks that won't roll as well as full size trucks. I'm not sure how your trailer is set up but you don't always need the biggest most expensive winch. Also, if you use a block you can double the capacity of any winch, although you'll need twice as much cable and reel-in time will be slower. Just some ideas.
dad has an old warren winch from probaly the 70's. It is 8000 capacity and will pull about anything. We got it for free.
You can get away with a 2000 lb. winch pretty easy, like has been said, if you double the line with a snatch block, you double the capacity of the winch.
All I have to say on the winches that are 6000 lbs rollings weight and 2000 lbs straight pull are crap. We bought one like that and it would always slip. It would struggle to pull a rolling car. We paid $75 for it and it was a waste of money. On the other hand my dad had one like this in the 70's and he said that he pulled big nonrolling cars. From what I have learned about winches I would stay away from the cheap winches. I would recommend you try to find a used winch around 8000 lbs capacity.
