I'm looking to convert my power steering to manual, looking at my 71 maverick with manual steering it would appear that the steering gear box is the same and it appears that all I need to change is the center link & pitman arm?
Can anyone confirm this and advise if there is any other items that need to be changed over

    Thank you, George :banghead:

gear box is the same execpt out power boxs have a quicker ratio....i have dont this only thing you need is a power steering adapter....i got mine from auto krafters i think it is the same for falcons also.....all you have to do is take the bolt of the bottom of the pitman arm and the tie rods that bolt to the center link...so that the center link comes down...get a ball joint sepater makes life easier you could get a hammer however i dont like hammering on stuff when i dont have to....unscrew the power steering valve... on the end of the center link the valve is bolted to the pitman arm...you can tell by all the power steering hoses go to take them all off..screw the new one on bolt everything back up...of course it comes with directions , but its pretty staright forward(y)

Question,, why does everyone want the old manual steering box VS power steering? Chad

I want it because it's one less thing to rebuild & worry about and the car is not that heavy and power steering is not required

only thing you change is the p/s valve...plus w/ power box it makes for a quicker ratio....

It seems like most of these old PS systems leak like crazy. Besides, if you choose a manual box when doing the conversion, it's REALLY easy to steer. :)

I'll admit, my 69.5 steers pretty easy, I got one of those steering wheels you can drive with handcuffs on,,, LOL! Thanks for the replies. Chad

    hello fellow members

I am putting in power steering in my 71 302 maverick since I just put the motor in but my center link will not fit, it keeps on hitting the oil pan. I tried to put back my manual but that too keeps hitting the oil pan. I have a new idle arm but still no good.

Also I need to change my pitman arm since the pitman on manual steering box is feed down and the power steer control valve is feed up through the pitman. Is this right?
