I went in today to ask for a new tailshaft bushing (to correct that highspeed wobble it has), and a guy in line with me said may as well get the tailshaft seal, and swap it out while I am in there.

The O'Reilly computer did not have them.

Anyone know the correct terminology or have part numbers for these, and should I do both?

Will the seal be difficult to get out?

I know the seal near the shifter was solid as rock and took quite a bit of cussing and hammering to get it out. Don't want this one to be as difficult...

The seal is on the very end of the tail shaft. Pull out the drive shaft and its right there. It will be much easier to get out than the bushing.

Some of that stuff isn`t alwase listed in the computer , in that case the parts man will need to use his brain and look the part up in the catalog (the paper one ).

That is what I thought...just wondered if anyone knew what I could ask for that would acutally turn up in the search at the parts house.

Found them in National Parts Depot catalog, for $6 and $8, free shipping. Says for Mustangs through '73. Shouldn't this work in ours?

If so, can't beat the shipping and NAFORD302 works with them, I think...

tailseal for c4 is same as powerglide, if that helps. bushing is unique to c4. try a regular auto parts store or trans supply store. if no luck otherwise, i know ATI sells them individually. plus shipping of course.

I got the rear seal for like $9 at Advance Auto. They had to special order it, got it the next day.

I will ask around, and if nobody can find it for me, I will have NPD ship to me. Prices were reasonable.

Glad to know that c4 is c4 regardless of year or which car.

To replace the tail shaft bushing you will need a bushing puller and a bushing driver . Both tools are special for change the bushing . The ones i used are from OTC and are pricey you may want to get the parts and take it to a trans shop

    thx jay

Should I go ahead and get a rubber mount insulator...is that one of the things that wears out on our cars?

I will check for wear. I doubt it has any. This car only has 55k miles on it, and the first 50k were put on prior to 1985 or so. I put the last 5k on in the last five years. and I don't know if these are worn, but am just replacing as a precaution and to see if I lose some of that vibration at speed...Sure won't hurt to sink another $20 into the trans.
