I've been keeping my eye out for a Maverick for going on 2 years now. I went and looked at one this past Sunday in Griffin, Ga

    76 Maverick on Ebay

First off, I was wondering if any of the Atlanta group has seen the car. You guys know more about what to look for than I do.

After looking at it I had a few questions.

    1. Are the shock tower braces missing or did they not have any in 76?

    2. I'm use to seeing a c4. This car had a 3 speed manual transmission. Do those have a good reputation and what would the name of that trans be?

    3. There was very little rust on the floors and fender wells. There was the usual rust on the hood lip. But the passenger door had rust at the bottom. Is this most likely a leak around the window seals?

    4. He wasn't sure and I couldn't tell, but it supposedly has a 9" rear end. What would I look for?

Thanks for any help. Finding the car may be the easy part. Next step is talking the wife into it, lol.

Soubt if it is a 9in, unless someone changed out the 8in for a 9. Looks like some type of racing shocks have been installed on the front, but can't see them that well. Should have braces on the towers, I think. Not bad car if the price is right. Look for wet carpet under the dash and even pull it up to see the floor. Might have the too common, cowl bucket rusted out. One of the bottom nuts on a 9in chunk, cannot be removed with a socket, must use a wrench. 8in can all be removed with socket.

one of the things i learned when looking at these cars is to take a gallon of water with you and pour it into the cowl vents in front of the windshield and see if any comes into the car. like dave said the car came with an 8" rear end. it's only a 9" if someone swapped it out and yes the braces are missing.:)

It was also a 5 lug car. Was that available in 76 or another conversion?

Yes, 5 lug was available actually as early as 1971, I think ( on some models ).

All '73 and up Mavericks had 5 lug wheels standard, and disc brakes up front were standard in '76, so it should have those. Two grand is VERY steep for that car IMO. I would give maybe $800 - $1000 max for it, and that's pushing it IMO...

Yeah, 2k is his asking price. The auction closed without a single bid.

When he got the car the engine had seized from the bearings. He put a 302 in it out of a truck. He put an 85 mustang 4bl aluminum intake manifold on it. Its currently hooked to a holley 750 carb. It is way over carb'd. You can smell it in the exhaust.

He's throwing in the original 302 that was in the car as well as a pair of shorty headers he had already bought but not installed. The original rims are also in the package. He just recently replaced the brakes, clutch, and gas tank.

One thing you can't see in the pics is that the back seat is mint. I mean its original, not faded, and not a seam loose.

Another is that the roof has U-shaped indentions. They aren't bad but you'll notice it. He said it was from kids sitting on the car. When he pulled up the buy the car there were kids sitting on it. Has anyone seen that before? Would a body shop be able to fix it or would it need a new roof?

After reading around on the forums, it looks like I'll be lucky if the shorties fit without too much trouble.

My dad has a set of Mustang Bullitt rims. The ones on that car are aweful. Would a 17 x 9 and 17 x 10 fit a Maverick? They look good on newer cars but I have my doubts about how they'll look on an older car.

Well, considering I have been driving a '95 Mustang GT 3 out of 5 days a week for the past couple of weeks, no, I don't have you on ignore. ;)

Those wheels will look awesome on an Maverick. The thing is if they were made for a newer Mustang, you will need spacers. I personally don't like spacers, but I'll leave that up to you...

Here is what my '74 Grabber looked like with '05 Mustang GT wheels. The rears were not even close to fitting without spacers. The fronts fit good enough to put the wheel on, but it rubbed on the back side. Obviously the car would need to be lowered to complete the look.

Thanks for the pics Jamie. Seeing them on a Maverick helps alot. The rims he has are 9" for the front and 10" for the rear. I'm guessing those 9's are going to be fun w/ no power stearing.

I didn't think to check the heater while I was there. Can you guys tell just from the pics if it even has a blower unit for the heater under the hood?

    Re: '76 on Ebay

    Hi Farmdog,

I'm pretty sure the black cylindrical thing sticking out of the firewall to the left of the engine is the heater blower motor - but don't quote me.

It's not at all like the set-up on my '76 parts car.

Maybe your picture is showing the set-up for a car without air conditioning ?

My '76 parts car has A/C and the blower motor is completely inside the car under the dash.

    Good luck,
    BaldEagleMav
