There is a lot of confusion about which headers if any fit our cars with a 351W swap. I thought I had seen a thread last year with pictures of the installation of Hooker 6901 in a car with the 351W, but now I can't find it. So hopefully this tread will clear things up a little bit. Owners of Maverick / Comet with 351 Windsor please vote and post information about your headers. Include: Info about the car engine, trans, shifter type Manufacturer Model / part number What modification had to be done to make them fit to the car and/or the headers Pictures / link to a thread about your installation would be great.
My headers are old and falling apart, actually the pass side header seems to be unmodified, but the drivers side is severly modified (or repaired). Correction both headers are modified The car has a 351W, C4, Floor shifter, modified shock towers, stearing drop bracket. Manufacturer of headers unknown
i have Hooker 6208 1 3/4 long tubes... Alot of work to make them fit... Must have floor shifter with these. The passenger side frame rail needs to be notched. The passenger side firewall needs a BFH. Driver side firewall needs a little hammering. The steering box needs a grinding to take off excess material. i have pictures ,ill see if i can upload any... Heres a link to the write up http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=27516
71 Comet manual steer, factory floor shift no mods to car or header. They were tubular automotives 1 1/2 tube to 2 1/2 collector. That was about 18 or 19 yrs ago though. forget the part # but I ordred them over the phone direct from them for what I needed. Hope that helps
I have been using a set of Modified(bashed)Hooker 302 header(cause I had'em)..but will be installing a set of Crites headers around the end of the month. I will let you know how they work..but they look like they will fit quite well. Put some pics here: http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?p=302193#post302193
I had a '71 grabber,351w with early(probably 69-70)manifolds.They fit w/no mods to car or manifolds, but they sat right up against the upper control arm bolts.
Took a picture with my passenger side header removed, seems to be a lot of space with the header removed.
I have a 72 Maverick 2 dr, 1990 351w, C4 trans, Powermaster mini-starter. Hurst Quarter Stick shifter (cable operated). I used a set of Hedman 88660 long tube headers, 1 5/8 tubes to 3 inch collector. I removed the power steering and went manual. I was intent on not making any body modifications so almost every tube needed to be massaged at the first bend to give it clearance and not touch the body. The number 4 tube I cut and welded in a slight elbow that was cut out of a short tailpipe with the same diameter tubing, this was to allow for pitman arm clearance. It's very tight, putting in the header bolts an be tough the first time, but I've developed a method and it's not so difficult now. Hope this helps, good luck!
Why is it that by looking at these photos I have the feeling that the new Doug Thurley shorties should fit in here. The photo on the left is a prototype of the Doug Thurley's on a 302, right is the 351W in my comet (it has 302 heads)
Yes, maybe, but look at the location of the exhaust ports in relation to the cut. Could someone measure the width of the new headers? ,from the flange.
I don't think the problem arises near the exhaust ports.....but down lower where all the pipes try to exit "down".
I just figured out that my car has a BIG bell housing (164 tooth flex-plate). And am wondering how that affects the header issue. Bigger bell housing = less space for the headers. 1. How about the rest of you 351W guys? is it big or is it small? 2. Has anybody tried the hedman 88300 with a 351W?
