Hello All This is a great site and I am pleasantly surprised to see that Mavericks are still going strong. To give a little background, about 25 years ago my first car was an orange 1970 maverick but unfortunately within a year I wrecked it (boys will be boys). I really liked that car and had some great memories with and always thought I would get another but life got in the way and I never got around to it. Anyway I have an opportunity to pick up another 1970 and while I haven't actually set eyes on it yet, this is what I know so far. It has 80,000 original miles on it and still runs well. From what I've been told the body is immaculate with no dents or rust and I hear that the interior is all original but in great shape. Being a 70 I would imagine that it has a 6 cyl. in it. It's being sold by a friend of a friend type deal and they want around $4,000 for it. What do you guys think..should I snap it up? Thanks Dan
Sounds like it must be a nice car...some pics and more details would be necessary to decide if its a deal for $4000 though. I've seen some nice ones go for less..and I've also seen some go for much more..so its tough to tell. See if you get more info and post some pics...and we will help with the best advice we can give....Good luck with your search
:Handshake "interior is all original" if the car hasn't been driven in some time ,my ex. is the seats will start comming apart as soon as you start sitting on them. that would be top dollar for a v8, 2 dr. car with no upgrades (motor/trans. rebuild new carb.,waterpump etc. etc.) my ...frank...
All original! Consider the facts.37 yrs. old. You have not seen the car. Unless it's been in a artificial climate controlled environment, which I highly doubt. It would not be worth the 4K. Unless you have that much extra cash floating around or, you really want the car in question. 2,500 sounds fair. But what do I know!!!!! Good Luck! RTFLDGR
i would take what they want with you... then look at the car, and decide what its worth to you 6cyl cars, are not worth as much as a v-8 car, just as said before.. the only reason you would pay that much, california cars are overly priced.. i used to live there so i can say that but remember... san diego is hard on cars, and the salt air can beat the paint up a bit.. just take a good look at it... i would even take it to a repair shop and pay a little cash for them to give it a once over if you are serious about it... and depending on what they say, adjust price as needed
Welcome fellow Californian . If the car is all original, then it will be a 6 cyl. Price sounds a little steep but pics will help us out. Good luck.
sounds high to me. also i would take a gallon of water with me and ask to pour it in to the cowl vents in front of the windshield. make sure none of it comes into the interior. better safe than sorry. it's an expensive/labor intensive fix.
Thanks Everyone I see your points and they are all valid. I guess that since my first car was a Maverick that it seems as though I am shopping with my heart and not my head. I've looked around online and I guess $4K is a little steep for a 37 year old 6 banger. I will keep looking although the pickings are a little scarce here in San Diego. I would like to find a California car just because of the body rot problems in some of the other climates around the country. My first and only Maverick from many years ago had bad rust on the drivers side quarter panel (I grew up in New York). I do have another question though. If I find a good one out of state does anyone think that i might have a problem with registration in San Diego (due to smog)?? Thanks again for all of your help Dan
not sure about the smog, but dosen't california have a smog exemption for cars that are so old. one of the other california guys can answer for sure.
California does not require smog anymore on that year vehicle, even when bringing it in from another state. Jody
Hi dplitt, I am also in San Diego. Welcome to the board! I would agree that $4k is high unless the car is immaculate in every way! Re: California smog requirements, any car older than 1975 (or 1976) does not require a smog check - even if you are bringing it in from another state. Are you planning to go the Fab Fords forever at Knott's Berry Farm on April 22nd? My wife and I are going. We won't be able to take our '73 Maverick (again!) this year, but it sounds like there will be maybe a half dozen Mavs there this year. It's always a great show! Good luck on your search for your perfect Maverick! Regards,
