grrrrrr..... so we got the headers on today (sorta), got the tranny mounted (it's good!), and got the engine in(sorta) haveing problems getting the engine to sit down completly on the motor mounts. something seems to be sticking. we belive it's the headers. we have the hedman headers #88-300 (longtubes) it seems to be getting caught up on the steering box (?) (the steering rod from the wheel goes to this box). we also got the p/s pump drop bracket, but we are not sure where or which way it installs. does anyone have pics of their engine with these headers bolted up? and any pics or a diagram of how the p/s pump drop bracket should be installed? thanks, robert and shannon sutton.
If you didn't already disconnect the frame end of the steering cylinder, that may be what is holding you up on the drivers side.
got it. the engine is still being held up by something. the box seems to be hitting the headers by maybe 1/2 an inch.
There is a tech article on your project in the forum's archives. I suggest you have a peek. something about one tube at the p/s pump and one tube where the frame has to be clearanced. ( A sledge hammer to mold the frame. RTFLDGR
Just swapping a 302 should not require any BFH mods!?! Assuming you have decent (and correct) headers, there should be no hammer here. You need the right frame stands, engine mounts, and headers. If all these are installed properly and in the right order, the thing should practically fall into place. I have never installed headers simultainiously with the engine though. It sounds to me that is what you are doing, unless I misunderstood your post. Get the engine/tranny in together, get all of those bugs worked out, then pull the long bolt from the engine mounts and tilt the engine up to install the headers. If you are putting it all in at once, you don't know exactly what is holding you up. One step at a time will reveal one problem at a time. Good luck Dave
This may be a dumb question, but I gotta ask. Did you bolt the engine/tranny together before dropping it in? That is how I have always done my Mavs. Much easier to get all the bolts lined up on the floor, then drop it in. If you have an auto tranny and it is not already together with the tranny, the converter bolts can get you askew a bit. If you dropped it in as a unit, disregard... Dave
I had to do some "massaging" to the firewall to put my long-tubes on (Hooker Super Comp). I also had to bend the shifter thingy out of the way (column shift). Good luck. "The bigger the hammer - the easier the job." You can quote me on that.
Well... :16suspect Most LT Maverick headers don't work with column shift. You just wanna be difficult.
