Hey guys! I'm getting some headers installed on the mav soon and I want to get good performance from them. Here in my city emissions tests haven't existed like 15 years ago, so there's no need to have mufflers in the car. I've read in the forums some of you have glasspacks, flowmasters, dynomax, etc. Some have H or X pipes, turndowns and other stuff I don't know their meaning. What would be the best choice if I don't have to worry about emissions???
Hey there. Glasspacks are a type of muffler that is a straight thru design, you can see right thru them and the use a fiberglass packing material around the outside to absorb some of the sound, more of a redneck pickup truck sound if you ask me. Hope I didn't offend anyone by that statement. Flowmasters and Dynomax are performance muffler brand names for a less restictive type of muffler that have a more deep, powerful, throaty sound with out being too loud. The H or X pipe is actually self descriptive in a sense, they connect the left and right exhaust pipes together to balance exhaust pressure between the two. They improve power and torque in most cases and also tend to be a little quieter. Turndowns are just a type of exit for the exhaust at the end of the pipe, generally just in front of the rear axle. The pipe is curved downward at the end and cut off at an angle. They can be quite loud because of the sound waves bouncing off the pavement and back off the bottom of the car. Hope that helps.
