I broke two of those the same way on my S/E dragster. Takes a minute to realize why it won't back up. It is a relief when you finally figure out it isn't the trans.

With any luck Don it won't be as bad as it sounds...if the motor was still purring when you shut it down it'll be OK...(y) I had the exact same thing happen to the white car at the track a few years back and it had just sheared the pump shaft off...a pain to fix but cheap:burnout:

with no oil pressure, and the spitting and sputtering that don was talking about, will there be any damage? and if so, where do you look first?

    the bearings? the cylinders?

Simon, I think the answer is everywhere. Since this is his race engine I am sure Don will disassemble the engine and inspect each part and replace as necessary.

my guess would be a tip of one of the valvesprings broke off (or some other debris), got into the oil pump, jammed the rotors, which locked the pump & twisted the oil pump shaft. Twisted oil pump shaft plays with the ign. timing (if it doesn't shear the pin & spin the gear a little on the shaft) and causes it to misfire & run like poo.

    Just an edumacated guess.
