i kenw this when i bought it, it was only $60 bucks on my end. so here's whats up the last registured owner of my comet was an old lady, the original owner in NJ. she had died and since then there has been 3 unregistured owners then me. so now come to find out the boy i got the car from has lost the original title, he thinks it was thrown out when they cleaned the interior. accroding to the DE DMV the registured owner, the dead lady, will need to request a new title that can then be transfered to my name. if that isnt problem enough i cant get ahold of any of the other previous owners nor do i even know what the woman's name was. to my knowlege diffrent services like carfax only cover model years '81 and up? I kinda understood this would be the worst case scernio when i picked up the car but i figured i could make my money back and some keeping the handfull of things i could use and parting/selling the rest but i would have rather made a beater/daily driver of it. so any ideas anybody? If anybody is intrested im willing to trade the whole car for a small bumper setup for my maverick
don't need to part it out . all you need to do is go to dmv request the info of the last registered owner name and adress send her a registered letter requesting a "loss of interest" statment.sence she has pasted away the letter will come back unsigned take that to dmv to show you have tried to get ahold of them with no affect. they sould give you a pink.If they do sign for the letter and no responce then first you need to call the gostbusters, then goto dmv and get the pink hope this help 71 comet cyclone III with "drag pack"
There are several companies that can get you a title. Problem is it cost like $150 from what I have seen. Glad I live in a state where titles aren't required for cars this old, because only one of mine has a good title, and it's wrecked.
Does anyone know a website to look up our mavericks VIN numbers on. I just think it would be neat to see where it was made and what the original specs of it are/were.
alright so i have a big update. the cop that invistigates cars at the DMV is only there one day a month, which was today. he ran the vin and its all clear. its not stolen, wanted, no tickets, NOTHIN so thats good, he said i was done with him. then i took it through actuall inspection. passes with flying colors. then i dropped off my bill of sale, insurance cards, etc off with the guy inside whos job it is to trace it back. he seems like a real stiff and i have a feeling he's going to make it as difficult as he can on me to get a clear title. but as of now its registured, inspected, has a 2 month temp tag and its insured. I just have to wait on the guy to cut me a DE title in my name. so far so good. i'll update when i get some news. i guess youll know if i dont get a title when you see a bunch of 4dr comet parts in the f/s section lol.
Rick had the same problem with the Maverick I sold him since GA does not have titles for cars that old I did not have one. Texas requires a title so he had to get a bonded Title for the next 3 years then he can get a real one.
I just got back from the *&%$! Texas Title and Registration Division this morning (again). After getting two appraisals (by a Certified Aprraiser who will charge me an unknown fee at this time) , I can then get a "Surety" bond ($100 per $1,000 value) plus a fee for having a credit check run ($??). Then pay ~$450 to the state to get a "Bonded" title that last 3 years. On top of that, I have to pay the Tax Assesor's office their part of the transaction (plus the yearly Registration fee (~$50-$85)???). That's on top of a $25 30-day temporary tag that I had to buy just so I could drive the car on the streets. I'll probably have to buy another before the ordeal is over. Oh yeah, almost forgot the Emmissions and Safety Inspection fee (can't remember how much that was - not much). On top of this, the time I've had to take off work has put a "strain" on things at my job (standing in 1/4 mile long lines for hours at the DMV AND the Title Registration Division is NOT what I anticipated). Another hiccup was the VIN does not "begin with a letter" - that caused an major issue in which the supervisor at one of the location all but accused me of lying about the VIN. I'm nowhere near finished. Each Department I go to makes me fill out forms, give them money, then sends me to another Department to fill out more forms and pay them money. Each state is different on what is required to get a "clean" title. Texas HAS to be one of the worst. Bottom line, if you're planning on getting a clean title in Texas, make sure the original title work has been signed, and in this case, Notarized and prepare yourself for a looooong ride, much frustation, and paying seeminlgy endless fees.
Holy Cow is right!!! Sorry to hear about all the trouble Rick ... Do they refund the $450 you paid for the title after 3 years? Did you explain to Texas that Georgia does not have titles for cars older than 1985? Texas definitely needs some sort of exemption for collector cars ...
Craig, Dan and I talked about doing the Mechanics Lien thing. I figured I'd go ahead do what I'm supposed to do - in hindsight. I would've spent more time into the Mechanic's Lien thing. On the way home today, I did find a guy who would sign-off on appraising the car @ $1,000 so that helped a lot. Now to the Tax Assessor's office next - then who knows where.
