LTD II was a Fox body.
They never came with 8" or 9" rears.
Would have had a forerunner to the 8.8" in it.

Are you sure it's an LTD II?
Maybe you found a Monarch. If it had either an 8" or 9", it would be a bolt in for a Maverick/Comet.
It is just over an inch wider overall, but everything else is same-same as our cars. The only problem someone might have is if they have max width tires/rims tucked under their car and don't have that extra .5" to play with.

The '78 LTD II that he's talking about was a full sized car that shared the Thunderbird/Cougar/Lincoln Mark V chassis, not the Fox bodied Fairmont/Zepher/Mustang/Capri/Thunderbird/Cougar/Granada/Monarch/LTD/Marquis (wow) version of the early 80s.

The width of this rear is much too wide for direct bolt in to a Maverick.

    Did they call those "II"s?
I thought the II designation was only used for the Fox LTDs...

Those late full size LTDs used 9.375" rears...
They were coil spring and far too wide.
They also used a larger bolt pattern on the rims.
    Was 5 on 5" IIRC.
I tried to swap a set of rims from one to a Torino and no-go.

The 9.375" housing will accept a 9" chunk...
The 9.375" itself has no aftermarket for gear selection and all the stock ones were super duper highway gears. I don't even think they were available with limited slip... not sure on that one though.

Yeah, they were officially called IIs.

The fox bodied ones were unofficially called IIs by "Ford people" due to the fact that during the early 80s Ford called the full size car the LTD Crown Victoria. So for a while there were 2 different cars that had LTD as part of its name. A TOTAL headache for parts guys. Fortunately Ford dropped the LTD from the Crown Vic car and then the fox LTD was replaced by the Taurus in '86.

Had a 77 LTd II once for parts. Had a 28 spline 9 inch rear but housing is way to wide for a maverick.

I've used LTD II 9 inch rears in Limited Late Model stock cars through the years. All of the ones that I found were 28 spline and were at least 6 inches wider than the 9 inch in my Maverick.

Just make sure it isn't a 9.375" center section...
I know the T-Birds and Cougars used them around that year...
I would think the LTD was the same.
It is not a desireable chunk.
